1► ABB's innovative technologies promote the development and utilization of geothermal energy, with a deep focus on geothermal power generation, transmission and distribution
2► Supporting the construction of China's diversified and complementary energy system, ABB has created a model of high-quality development in the field of comprehensive energy utilization, realized the coordinated operation of "source, grid, load and storage", and unleashed the potential of carbon reduction.
As a green energy source, geothermal energy has great potential to provide a stable and reliable solution for energy supply and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight climate change. In the context of energy transition and environmental protection, the development and utilization of geothermal energy has attracted increasing global attention.
On September 15, the 2023 World Geothermal Congress (WGC) was held in Beijing, hosted by the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and hosted by Sinopec. ABB showcased a full range of solutions from power distribution equipment to energy management platforms to help the geothermal industry achieve sustainable clean energy utilization, energy efficiency optimization, and electrification rate improvement, and empower a green and low-carbon society.
The theme of the 2023 World Geothermal Congress is "Clean Geothermal, Green Earth", which aims to promote the wider application and promotion of geothermal energy as a clean and renewable form of energy on a global scale. At the conference, experts and scholars from various countries will share the research results and industry development trends of emerging geothermal energy technologies, and discuss how enterprises can use geothermal energy to achieve sustainable development in the green transition.
At the exhibition, ABB presented a panoramic view of smart O&M solutions from three perspectives: power distribution system operation management, power distribution equipment health management, and pre-installed solutions. The digital physical display of the power distribution system was also the highlight of the ABB booth, with exhibits including NeoGear low-voltage switchgear, WavePro busway, Lmax busway, etc.
ABB's prefabricated substation solution adopts modular design and on-demand customization solutions, which greatly reduces the workload of on-site installation and commissioning, shortens the project construction period, and helps users avoid the risk of cost overruns and construction delays. In line with the concept of safe electricity use, the medium-voltage switchgear is equipped with pressure relief channels, air-conditioning system and fire protection linkage, SF6 gas leakage alarm, accident exhaust treatment and equipotential grounding measures; The use of ABB compact switchgear such as UniGear ZS1 air-insulated switchgear, ZX2 gas-insulated switchgear, Safe Air 12kV dry air-insulated ring main unit, etc., can greatly optimize the space layout, save floor space, reduce the difficulty of on-site construction, improve construction efficiency, and are widely used in geothermal power generation, oil and gas exploitation, offshore platforms and overseas EPC projects.
Innovation is key to achieving a low-carbon transition. The innovative laminated busbar solution of the NeoGear low-voltage switchgear reduces the footprint by up to 25% and reduces heat consumption by up to 20% in such a compact space, effectively improving energy efficiency. The switchgear also features a "higher level" safety design that eliminates the danger of exposed live parts, using 92% fewer busbar assemblies and 90% fewer electrical connectors than traditional switchgear. NeoGear offers greater safety, greater reliability, greater flexibility, operational efficiency, and a significant return on investment, making it ideal for geothermal power generation and distribution.
ABB WavePro and Lmax series low-voltage intensive busway is a complete set of equipment used for transmission and distribution of electric energy in low-voltage power distribution system, which has the advantages of large current-carrying capacity, high protection level, convenient distribution of electric energy, safety and reliability. These two busway products will further improve the electrification rate of the energy system and provide reliable support for the use of clean energy.
In 2020, ABB released its 2030 Sustainability Strategy, which will focus on clean energy utilization, energy efficiency optimization, and electrification rate improvement through innovative technologies to empower a low-carbon society. As a pioneer in sustainable development, ABB is actively engaged in the green transformation to reduce its carbon emissions by adopting renewable electricity, using energy efficiency and building automation management systems, upgrading equipment and renovating production processes, and promoting zero waste to landfill.
Today, ABB Xiamen Industrial Center Park has become a model project for low-carbon transformation of enterprises, using 12.3MW of photovoltaic power on the 100,000㎡ roof of the park's factory to achieve 50% clean energy power substitution, showing the ability of ABB Ability smart energy management platform to build a highly resilient power distribution network, integrating new energy access, energy storage systems, energy management systems, vehicle charging piles, and building and home control systems, and achieving grid security and dynamic balance between supply and demand through multi-strategy flexible control. The "source-to-load" model will be upgraded to the coordinated operation of "source-grid-load-storage" to realize the on-site consumption of distributed clean energy and release the potential of carbon emission reduction.
