ABB has been selected by United Kingdom SSE Renewables and Norway Equinor Energy to supply a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) light® converter system to connect the world's largest offshore wind farm in the Dogger Bank region of the North Sea to the United Kingdom transmission network.
When HVDC technology is first used in the United Kingdom offshore wind market, ABB will offer technology with the smallest environmental footprint, due to the most compact plant design and the lowest energy losses in the power industry. ABB will supply the HVDC Light® converter system, while Aibel will supply two HVDC offshore converter platforms. In 2016, ABB and Aibel announced a partnership for the design, engineering and optimization of offshore wind connections.

The Dogger Bank development includes three wind farm projects – Creyke Beck A and B and Teesside A. It will make a significant contribution to the United Kingdom government's target of purchasing one-third of its electricity from offshore wind by 2030. ABB has been awarded contracts for Kreekbeck A and Kreckbeck B.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), global offshore wind capacity could increase by a factor of 15 by 2040 and attract around $1 trillion in cumulative investment. This is due to increased competitiveness, supportive government policies, and some notable technological advancements.
More than 60 years ago, ABB pioneered commercial HVDC technology. It is a highly efficient alternative to alternating current (AC) and is used to transmit large amounts of electricity with higher efficiency and lower electrical losses. HVDC helps to transmit power safely and stably in networks that operate at different voltages and frequencies. This makes the technology suitable for many critical power applications, with the ability to integrate renewable energy from offshore wind farms and interconnect with AC networks.
