The fourth round of the sixth season of the ABB Formula E Championship returns
From production to infrastructure, ABB's groundbreaking technologies are supporting the country's focus on more sustainable mobility
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship will return to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez circuit in Mexico City for the fourth round of Season 6.
A scorching race in San Diego saw Max · Gunther win his first ABB Formula E win with a daring overtake on the final lap, with another stop in Latin America and a fifth return to Mexico City.
Not only is it the fastest track on the calendar, with a mix of long straights and technical sections inside the iconic Foro Sol stadium, the Mexico E-Prix is also the highest track at 2,250m above sea level.
In last year's event, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler's Lucas Di Grassi narrowly beat Mahindra Racing's Pascal Wehrlein to claim the victory, as Wehrlein's battery lost all its charge within a few metres of the checkered flag. It was Di Grasi's second Mexico victory after winning the title in 2017, and the 2020 CBMM niobium Mexico City E-Prix gave him the opportunity to complete a Mexico hat-trick.
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez will also host the Jaguar I-PACE eTROPHY, a support series for the third round of the tournament, of which ABB is the official charging partner.
For more than a century, ABB has been providing technology to help Mexico grow its economy and infrastructure. The company has become a strategic partner to the country, helping to embrace the rapid development of global energy production and supply and the digital industrial revolution. More recently, ABB projects have focused on mobility, sustainable energy, and the development of industrial and smart solutions, helping to support Mexico's ambitious goals in these areas.
Vicente Magaña, President and CEO of ABB Mexico, said: "In this championship, we seek to promote electric vehicle technology and pave the way for future mobility solutions. The championship validates the enormous potential of electric vehicles to not only transport us cleaner and more efficiently, but also to get us excited on the track. At ABB, we work with a wide range of partners to ensure that these new mobile technologies benefit society as a whole. ”
ABB Mexico employs more than 4,000 people in 10 locations and is headquartered in Mexico City. The company has a strong presence in the automotive, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical manufacturing sectors. ABB has also completed major projects in power infrastructure – developing reliable, smart and clean grids – the oil and gas industry, smart ports, renewable energy and electric vehicles.
ABB is driving electric vehicles forward in Mexico, from production to charging infrastructure. Nine out of ten cars produced in Mexico have benefited from some form of ABB technology, and the company has installed 15 charging stations in the country.
Some of these are helping complete the United States-Mexico Electric Vehicle Corridor Program, which aims to provide enough charging infrastructure to allow commercial electric vehicles to travel from Mexico City to Texas. Three Terra 53 chargers were provided for the central part of the corridor – each 110 km apart.
ABB Ability™ technology showcases ABB's digital solutions that ensure chargers operate 24/7, as remote connectivity allows them to be continuously monitored from any location.
To extend the long-standing relationship between ABB and Porsche, the brand's main Mexico dealers will install nine Terra HP 175 kW chargers to support the introduction of the Porsche Taycan to the Mexico market. The partnership continues with the announcement in San Diego that ABB has become an official partner of TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, and the two brands will work together to advance the development of electric vehicles.
ABB Mexico's project offers proven technology for safe and reliable control of demanding applications, such as its collaboration with construction materials and solutions company LafargeHolcim at its Acapulco cement plant. ABB replaced the distributed control system (DCS) with a state-of-the-art controller and input/output modules. The company also implemented a solution to increase the available energy of the control system, improve efficiency in the field, and safe electrical integration.
