At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2021, Dr. Shiming An, President of ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation Division, delivered a keynote speech that showcased how ABB is using AI and robotics skills to transform the industry, enable new uses of automation beyond the production domain, and then promote sustainable growth in different economic sectors.
Held in Shanghai, China from July 8 to 10, 2021, the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) aims to showcase the latest development of global AI skills and gather the most influential scientists, entrepreneurs, scholars and government leaders in the field of AI to discuss the frontiers and development trends of AI skills.
This is the second year in a row that Dr. An Shiming has given a speech announcing his purpose at the Industry Development Plenary Meeting. In the past year, the pandemic has accelerated automation and digitalization around the world, and businesses around the world are responding to changes in customer needs caused by four major trends: the prevalence of personalized consumption, the acceleration of digitalization, labor shortages, and increased uncertainty. Robotics skills are undergoing a career change, and AI skills are crucial in this transformation.
ABB is committed to using AI skills to build smarter robots, so that companies can respond to these four trends with agility and efficiency, and seize development opportunities." "AI robots can help improve production efficiency, reduce waste, reduce production costs, make operations safer and more productive, and will help society move towards a more sustainable future."
An Shiming also introduced the three major research areas of ABB's artificial intelligence robot skills: in the field of vision and sensing, artificial intelligence robots can complete various tasks faster, more accurately and more efficiently; By improving autonomy and mobility, robots are able to work in increasingly messy tasks; Reinforcement learning enables robots to work in an untethered environment. An Shiming also shared ABB's latest achievements in these areas, and showed the use of ABB's AI robots in Tianjin Port: ABB's AI robots can quickly and efficiently complete hundreds of different types of container twist lock and unlock tasks, freeing workers from this boring, dirty and risky repetitive job.
Artificial intelligence is expanding automation skills to a wider range of uses, and robotics skills are gradually expanding from the factory floor to warehouses, hospitals, restaurants, shops, and other use cases. By blending AI skills, robots can work better side-by-side with humans, freeing up humans to do more meaningful work. Now, we are using the power of artificial intelligence to develop robots that can support and improve jobs in a wide range of industries. An Shiming added.
At the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, ABB also showcased its new generation of cobot GoFa™ and SWIFTI.In™ February this year, ABB officially launched these two robots, further expanding its cobot portfolio. With its intuitive design, easy-to-program features, and robust safety features, the new generation of cobots can help new users from all walks of life, including healthcare, logistics, retail, and industrial SMEs, to move towards automation.
