Recently, Meta, President of ABB Motion Control Business Unit and member of the Executive Committee of ABB Group, visited China to have in-depth exchanges with the government, customers, media and employees, and visited the newly completed ABB Drives R&D Center in Beijing and the ABB Motor and Generator Factory in Shanghai. He affirmed the development achievements of ABB's business in China and looked forward to greater development prospects in the future.
China is actively promoting the implementation of the "dual carbon" goal, and scientific and technological innovation is the key engine to support and lead green and high-quality development. In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, Mehta said, "I am very pleased to see that China is rapidly moving towards an efficient and low-carbon society. From new national standards for energy efficiency to feedback from recent customer surveys, all industries are taking action to make low-carbon not just words, but real reality. This trend is highly aligned with the direction of our business. ABB is increasing its R&D efforts to develop more energy-efficient products and solutions to support China's further acceleration towards a low-carbon future. ”
Innovation is at the core of ABB's competitiveness in the market, and it is also one of ABB's key investment areas in China. Over the years, ABB's motion control business in China has continued to improve its local R&D capabilities, and currently has about 450 R&D personnel in Beijing and Shanghai, leading or participating in the development of many innovative products, including inverters, cloud-connected control panels, high-voltage motors, and low-voltage motors. In 2022, ABB Transmission & Controls' R&D headquarters in North Asia was inaugurated in Beijing, which responds to market demand more quickly and efficiently with customized products and services, and contributes to long-term business growth. Previously, ABB also established the Nanjing Servo Product R&D Center, focusing on the development of a new generation of servo products.
ABB Motion Controls has been recognized for its innovative strength and technology leadership in the Chinese market. In 2022, Beijing ABB Electric Drive System Co., Ltd. became the first batch of foreign-funded R&D centers in Beijing recognized by the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Zhongguancun Science Park Management Committee. ABB High Voltage Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd., located in Minhang Development Zone, Shanghai, have been recognized as foreign-funded R&D centers by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce. These three companies have also been selected as one of the "Top 100 in China's Electrical Industry" and won industry awards for many times.
With the mission of "Driving the World and Saving Energy", ABB Motion Development develops and delivers innovative inverters, motors, generators, and integrated digital drive chain solutions that enable industries to save energy and reduce emissions and address the growing challenges of climate change and energy, in line with China's "dual carbon" goals. By the end of 2022, ABB had delivered more than 11 million inverters and high-efficiency motors in China, saving more than 510 billion kWh of electricity, equivalent to reducing about 500 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, and saving electricity equivalent to the total electricity consumption of Shanghai in three years.
At the same time, ABB aims to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030, and achieves sustainable development through the adoption of renewable energy power generation, energy efficiency improvement, and emission reduction. Not long ago, the "green factory" Beijing ABB Electric Drive System Co., Ltd. and its Nanjing Servo R&D Center received the "Carbon Neutrality" certificate issued by Beijing Green Exchange Co., Ltd., marking that ABB Drives has achieved the goal of carbon neutrality in its operations in 2022. Two of ABB's companies, ABB High Voltage Motor Co., Ltd. and Shanghai ABB Motor Co., Ltd., have been selected as "Zero-Carbon Benchmark Factories" by the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Information Technology, and are on track to achieve the Group's sustainability goals ahead of schedule.
In order to raise awareness of energy conservation and combat climate change, ABB has launched the "Energy Efficiency Action" initiative around the world since 2021. As part of the initiative's series of activities, ABB held the ABB China Energy Conservation and Efficiency Symposium in March this year, where experts and representatives from the government, academia and business sectors had in-depth exchanges on the theme of energy conservation and efficiency, interpreted the opportunities and challenges faced by improving industrial energy efficiency, and jointly explored a new model of low-carbon transformation to build a new ecology of green development. More Chinese companies are joining the initiative and taking concrete actions to reduce energy consumption and emissions.
According to a global survey commissioned by ABB last year, China is leading the way in energy efficiency investment, with 86% of Chinese companies surveyed planning to improve the energy efficiency of their operations. These findings reflect the Chinese government's achievements in the 14th Five-Year Plan and its efforts to combat climate change. ABB believes that technology is the key to enabling future prosperity and sustainable development, and will develop more high-efficiency motor and inverter products and solutions that integrate digital technology to support various industries in China to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions, and help achieve the "dual carbon" goal and high-quality sustainable development.
ABB (ABBN: SIX Swiss Ex) is a global technology leader that transforms society and industry for a more efficient and sustainable future. ABB continues to push the boundaries of technology and improve performance by integrating smart technologies into electrical, robotics, automation, and motion control products and solutions through software. With more than 130 years of excellence, ABB operates in more than 100 countries and employs 105,000 people. ABB has a full range of business activities in China, including R&D, manufacturing, sales and engineering services, with 27 local companies and 15,000 employees in nearly 130 cities, and online and offline channels covering about 700 cities across the country.
