The 1Maju 510 tugboat successfully passed sea trials in Singapore, verifying the autonomous collision avoidance capability of ABB Ability's™ ship situational awareness technology

2Keppel Offshore & Marine developed a tugboat that became the first vessel in the industry to receive the autonomous designation from the United States Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA).

3ABB's groundbreaking digital technology replaces the crew to automate routine tasks, allowing the crew to focus on safety and respond calmly in the event of an emergency, improving the overall safety of the operation

With ABB's digital technology, the port tugboat Maju 510 was the first to receive the world's first United States Bureau of Shipping (ABS) autonomous and remotely controlled navigation symbol, and the first Singapore flagged vessel to receive the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) smart (autonomous) symbol. The class symbols are a recognition of the vessel's groundbreaking performance, confirming its autonomous collision avoidance capability during a trial at Raffles Reserved Anchorage off Singapore Island in March 2022.
Autonomous collision avoidance is successful! ABB's digital technology enhances the ability of autonomous ship operation
Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) is the project lead for the autonomous solution for the Maju 510 tugboat, which is part of and operated by Keppel Smit Towage, a subsidiary of the Rimorchiatori Mediterranei Group. In April 2021, the vessel made a splash during its first remote operation test at the Port of Singapore, becoming the first ship in the world to receive the ABS remote control navigation symbol. The latest sea trials have demonstrated the next-level autonomy of ships, proving that the ABB Ability™ Ship Situational Awareness System and the ABB Ability Ship Situational™ Control System have functions such as automatic situational awareness, collision avoidance and maneuver control.

The 32-metre-long harbor tugboat confirms autonomous collision avoidance in a variety of scenarios, such as when two other vessels are simultaneously approaching along the collision path, or when a nearby vessel behaves abnormally. The tests were carried out under the supervision of the tugboat captain.

Romi Kaushal, Managing Director of Keppel Smit Towage, said:

I was delighted to be able to board the Maju 510 during the collision avoidance test and experience first-hand the smooth operation of the tug in autonomous mode, and I was particularly impressed by the digital system's ability to identify one or more risks in the tugboat's intended path and respond to them to guide the vessel to a new, safer route. The vessel behaves as if it were operated by an experienced tugboat captain.

By allowing crews to focus on the overall situation rather than performing specific maneuvering tasks, the ABB Ability™ marine situational awareness product line enhances the safety and efficiency of tugboat operations, which is especially important in congested hubs like Singapore, the world's busiest container ports. In addition, these systems can be upgraded to achieve a higher level of autonomy in accordance with local regulations and the requirements of the vessel.

Aziz Merchant, Executive Director of Keppel Offshore & Marine, said:

As a system integrator, Keppel O&M worked with ABB to develop a customized autonomous solution to improve the safety and efficiency of vessel operations. By freeing the crew from time-consuming and routine tasks, it helps to concentrate and improve operational accuracy. Our autonomous solutions show that operational safety can be improved even in the busiest ports. The future-proof solution addresses the growing demand for tugboat operations at the Port of Singapore, with digitalization, enhanced connectivity and integration of ABB technology to generate high-precision positioning and maneuvering, as well as marine object recognition and classification through an AI engine.

Kou Yuehua, President of ABB Marine & Ports, commented:

We are proud to partner with Keppel Offshore & Marine to take a big step towards autonomous tugboat operations, with autonomous solutions that help crews perform their duties as safely and efficiently as possible." The same technology can be applied to all types of vessels, including wind turbine installation vessels, cruise ships and ferries.

In a previous successful demonstration of ABB's autonomous technology, the ice class passenger ferry Suomenlinna II (Finland II) was remotely navigated through the port of Helsinki. Like the Maju 510, the Suomenlinna II is equipped with the ABB Ability™ Ship Situational Awareness System and the ABB Ability™ Ship Situational Control System.

Most ships benefit from a higher level of autonomy for safer, more efficient and more sustainable operations. Better mobility helps prevent accidents, increase productivity and reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
