The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to make green hydrogen a financially viable option for customers across a wide range of industries
Global technology companies ABB and Hydrogen Optimized have agreed to jointly explore the development of large-scale, grid-connected green hydrogen production systems to provide clean, sustainable and affordable power.
Hydrogen Optimized has the ambition to use its high-current water electrolysis skills to produce green hydrogen for new clean applications in a variety of occupations, including chemicals, utilities and transportation. ABB's hydrogen research team will explore power supply optimization through a project involving ABB's High Power Rectifier (HPR) system.
Together, the two companies demonstrate that Hydrogen Optimized's RuggedCell™ water electrolysis skills can be used to develop integrated product solutions based on a 100MW single-module plant design concept.
ABB is the world's leading supplier of high-power rectifiers for any industrial application, offering maximum availability, productivity and a strong focus on personnel safety. Within its HPR range, the rectifier system supplies DC currents ranging from 5,000A to 550,000A as a single or multiple unit, allowing for an almost unlimited combination of currents and voltages and meeting the specific requirements of most plants.
Andrew TB Stuart, President and CEO of Hydrogen Optimized, said: "ABB is a global leader in handling and electrification solutions designed for large-scale electrochemical processes. "It's a perfect fit for our patent-pending RuggedCell™. With the addition of green hydrogen project planning, these skills work together to reduce the capital cost of the plant. ”
"Our joint work will lay the foundation for single-plant planning in the input power range of up to hundreds of megawatts. Demonstrating the scalability of these two key components of a water electrolysis plant is critical to economical green hydrogen, and we are excited about the potential benefits for our customers." ”
The memorandum of understanding signed by the two companies formalizes the agreement to explore the implementation of the demonstration system and the preparation of a 100MW plant design and commercialisation strategy.
Charl Marais, Global Product Manager Process Industries at ABB, explains: "This project leveraged our strengths to build a large, efficient, and customized HPR system that pushed the limits of a single rectifier unit. "Based on our many years of experience supplying control and electrical system solutions for electrochemical careers, we know that HPR systems have the characteristics needed to successfully lay out large-scale planning projects."
"This collaboration improves the commercial availability and viability of a green hydrogen system for a large plan. We have been exploring such projects for more than two years, and the synergies with Hydrogen Optimized are remarkable. We have a clear vision, and the outcome may be important. ”
Applications of green hydrogen include the supply of zero-emission transport fuels, the chemical production of ammonia and other non-fossil hydrogen, and the production of green metals using hydrogen instead of coking.
