In the second quarter of 2018, China National Petroleum Engineering Construction Corporation (CPECC) awarded ABB an order for integrated automation, electrification and telecommunications for the upgrade of the Bab onshore oil field in Abu Dhabi, with a total value of US$79 million.
Covering an area of 1,200 square kilometres, the Bab field is the largest onshore oil field in Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi state-owned oil company (ADNOC) has identified that the field's production could increase from 420,000 barrels per day to 450,000 barrels per day by 2020. In 2015, ADNOC Onshore awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to CPECC to upgrade the field.
The upgrade will include ABB's Electrical, Control and Telecommunications (ECT) fully integrated solution, including 45 power and capacitor bank platforms, as well as a centralized and localized automation system. ABB's capability digital oilfield technology will further enhance the ECT solution, which will remotely monitor and analyze the performance of multiple wells in the field at the same time. Once installed, the field is expected to reduce operating expenses by 10% to 15%.
Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB's Industrial Automation Division, said: "We are very proud to have won this contract because of our ability to provide a fully integrated solution that leverages our industry-leading ABB capabilities for process control systems. In addition, we demonstrate the strongest local footprint, our equipment is built or assembled in the U.A.E., and our services are provided by local staff. In recent years, U.A.E. government has announced policies to strengthen the role of the private sector in appointing and training nationals, U.A.E. level of national value provided when tendering industrial projects has become increasingly important.
Terwiesch added, "Hiring and training U.A.E. people to become high-performing employees has been a focus of our focus in the United Arab Emirates in recent years. I am delighted that our efforts were recognized by the U.A.E. Government in October 2018 when we received the U.A.E. Award.
The digital technologies deployed at the facility will help ADNOC improve operational performance by leveraging ABB's capabilities in unified, cross-industry, digital services, connected devices, systems, solutions and services.
ABB provides integrated products, services and solutions to help customers in the oil, gas and chemical industries optimize their safety, productivity and energy efficiency while reducing costs, schedules and risks.
