Prior to ABB New York City E-Prix, Bob Stojanovic, Director of Electric Cars North America, shares insights on the importance of electric sedans in the United States and the tremendous opportunities for growth in the latest episode of ABB DECODED.
United States is currently ABB's largest customer mall, accounting for about a quarter of the group's revenue. The company employs approximately 21,000 people at more than 100 locations in all states of the country and has nearly 50 manufacturing sites.
For more than a decade, ABB has been a leader in electric sedans, and nowhere is this more than in the United States, working with sedan OEMs, charging network operators and utilities to advance interoperability and accelerate the deployment of electric sedans for all types of vehicles.
Why are electric sedans important?
One of the most significant and well-documented reasons why electric cars are important is to cut greenhouse gas emissions, as you can get more power by running a vehicle that is not powered by fossil fuels. However, there are other advantages to Bob's commentary.
"A few years ago, when I was in New York City, it occurred to me that a lot of stuff was being delivered by diesel trucks, and it was very loud there, especially in a concrete jungle like Manhattan, where there were a lot of things. I think people's lives in urban environments change when noise and toxic fumes disappear. This is really a factor that people don't talk about enough. ”
The increase in electric cars in the United States and the response
"The profession is moving forward because it's a better comprehension from the driver's point of view, so there's a need to have the infrastructure to support the vehicle on the road."
Over the past decade, ABB has deployed more than 3,000 DC fast chargers in the United States, supplying bus and fleet charging systems to Portland, Los Angeles, St. Louis and other cities in the United States. In addition to the chargers themselves, ABB also supplies total solutions for electric cars, including complete on-site electrification, including integrated battery storage, power and load handling, or grid services with bidirectional charging.
ABB will continue to improve its best-selling Terra HP chargers, offering the easiest possible charging guide for electric car drivers and a variety of customization options for charging operators. The next-generation 350 kW Terra HP supplies a premium charging solution for the growing number of electric car drivers in North America.
"North America is still in its early stages when it comes to electric sedans. I think it's a great takeover for early adopters because they recognize how good the technology is and how good it can become, but there's still a long way to go. We must be witnessing a massive uptick in preparation for the increase in electric sedans that we will see. So, for example, car manufacturers are making great efforts to build dealers and prepare to support the sale of these cars by adding infrastructure over the next year and a half. ”
"I think we as a society need to come together on how to pay for the infrastructure that we need. Because this varies from state to state, it's a bit difficult for United States. One of the most controversial issues now is how to replace the fuel tax that subsidizes the cost of travel. So, in order to guarantee that we can successfully protect and operate the infrastructure, these are all operations that need to be considered. ”
The role of ABB New York City E-Prix
One of the key factors driving electric cars forward is to dispel misconceptions. This is where high-profile projects and events that push the boundaries of technology, such as the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, can play an important role.
"ABB Formula E really ignites people's passion, especially in our profession. It's a celebration of mobile electrification and what can be done in practice. Because let's face it, that's what reality is, right? We're showing what can be done with seemingly unconventional technologies. ”
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to New York City for the fourth time, racing on the tough concrete of the Red Hook Raceway in Brooklyn. The competition will be ABB's first time winning the naming rights to the E-Prix, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the all-electric series.
