ABB has signed a landmark contract with Spain shipyard Astilleros Gondán to provide an all-electric solution for 40-metre fast city passenger ferries, each capable of transporting up to 540 passengers across the Tagus River in Lisbon.
The 10 new ferries will be operated by the public ferry company Transtejo, SA and will replace the existing fleet on this route when it becomes operational in 2022-2024. In addition to energy storage, ABB will also provide fully integrated power solutions and integrated marine and propulsion automation systems. The fleet renewal project represents a significant commitment by Lisbon city planners to accelerate the introduction of emission-free public transport solutions. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed.
Increasing the electrification of transport, including inland waterways, will play a key role in helping Portugal achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. According to the National 2050 Carbon Neutrality Roadmap, the transport sector aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 98% compared to 2005, by strengthening the role of the public transport system and replacing current fossil fuel modes of transport with a fleet of mostly electric vehicles.
ABB estimates that switching 10 ferries operating on the Tagus River from diesel power to an all-electric integrated power solution is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by around 6,500 tonnes per year. This is equivalent to the CO2 emissions generated by around 1,400 passenger cars per year.

Today, the technology chosen for the operation of fast ferries so close to the city center must be clean and green, with proven safety and reliability," said Antonio Pacheco, head of the GRP department at Astilleros Gondán. "ABB was selected for its energy efficiency and its extensive experience in providing all-electric and hybrid propulsion solutions for the ferry market."

The new ferry, which will be key to Lisbon's public transport system, will be powered by a battery pack with a total capacity of 1,860 kWh. ABB's initial contract covers fully integrated power solutions and integrated ship and propulsion automation systems for all ten ferries, as well as battery packs for the first vessel in the series. ABB's award-winning Onboard DC Grid™ power distribution system will ensure that the battery output is optimally delivered to the ferry's subsystems and that other propulsion system components are safely integrated and operate reliably. The entire power setup will be controlled by ABB's Power and Energy Management System (PEMS™), which will also improve fault tolerance and provide a high degree of reliability while ensuring the longest battery life.
Each 40-metre ferry will carry up to 540 passengers on the three main routes connecting Lisbon with Cacilhas, Seixal and Montijo, on the south bank of the Tagus River. They have a service speed of 16 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots.
The International Maritime Organization aims to reduce annual emissions from ships by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels, and the all-electric ferry project makes a significant contribution to sustainable shipping in the city of Lisbon. Interferry, the ferry industry association, estimates that the sector transports more than 2 billion passengers worldwide each year, and electric propulsion is considered a proven technology that can reduce emissions globally.
Data from the Maritime Battery Forum suggests that more than 130 battery-powered ferries are already in operation, with a further 90 on order. Building on its strong presence in ship electrification, ABB has announced all-electric ferry projects with P&O Ferries, Washington State Ferries and the Port Authority of Busan in Korea over the past nine months.
