ABB AbilityTM smart sensor technology, combined with HPE's Aruba Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-enabled access points, enables scalable connectivity and gives industrial customers insight into the health and performance of their devices.
ABB will participate in the HPE Discover Virtual Experience starting June 23 to launch a scalable, high-performance wireless condition monitoring solution for large-scale industrial applications.
Customers with large sites, such as automotive manufacturing facilities, processing plants, or airport baggage handling systems, can now use ABB Ability™ smart sensor technology in conjunction with Aruba Wi-Fi infrastructure to derive valuable health and performance data from their rotating equipment. They can then access this information through a web portal, cloud interface, tablet, or mobile phone app for further analysis, providing useful insights into their operations.
The use of wireless sensors eliminates the cost and complexity associated with the installation, wiring, and connection of sensors. Now, it's easier for customers to deploy condition monitoring throughout their operations – potentially hundreds or even thousands of individual motors, pumps, bearings, and gears. In addition, with ABB's smart sensors for hazardous areas, the scope of the technology will be extended to oil and gas and chemical processing plants.
Bernd Heisterkamp, Smart Solutions at ABB Motion Services, said: "Smart sensor technology with Aruba Wi-Fi infrastructure is a game-changing solution for condition monitoring at scale. "Smart sensors are easy to install and commission – just activate the sensors, let them connect to the network via Bluetooth – and you're ready to go."
One of the pilot installations of ABB Ability's™ smart sensors running on Aruba infrastructure is being commissioned at Axpo, one of Switzerland's largest renewable energy producers and an international leader in energy trading. Commercial installations are currently being discussed with a number of customers.
"When we first heard about this joint ABB-Aruba solution, we knew it would be a perfect fit for our 360-degree approach to digital power plants," said Emil Bieri, Head of Digital Transformation Hydro at Axpo. "ABB's new products are easy to deploy and provide the insight and scalability we need for our large hydroelectric plant."
HPE and ABB have been global strategic partners since November 2017. This relationship brings together ABB's best digital offerings with HPE's industry-leading networking, secure edge computing and hybrid information technology (IT) solutions, and everything new – the service model.
