As the global population increases, there is an urgent need to find new and innovative ways to meet food needs around the world. Since 1970, fish farming has existed in Northern Europe and has developed into a major industry. Royal Salmon of Norway (NRS) is a leading producer of sustainable salmon, selling around 70,000 tonnes of salmon per year. That's the equivalent of eating a million servings of salmon a day for the year.

In the harsh and sometimes dangerous environment of Norway's northernmost region, NRS seeks to improve the safety of its employees, reduce operating costs and prioritize the sustainability of Nordic aquaculture.

Through a pilot of artificial intelligence (AI) for salmon analysis, ABB and Microsoft have created a solution with NRS to produce quality food in a safer and more environmentally friendly way. The pilots showed that the NRS could improve the efficiency and safety of its workers, who now no longer need to be on the high seas as often as they used to. New technologies will have an impact on the CO2 footprint due to fewer operations and better fish welfare, resulting in cleaner oceans and more efficient.

ABB and Microsoft implemented remote visual detection technology for biomass estimation and fish population counting. This technology will monitor salmon growth and reduce the workload of NRS staff, while having advantages in collecting critical data on salmon production.

Underwater cameras capture images of salmon in underwater fishing rings, floating for kilometers at sea. An artificial intelligence layer on top of the video footage can automatically measure and count salmon.
