ABB's number one Switzerland company in terms of patent filings in 2020

With 678 patent applications, ABB has filed more applications with the European Patent Office than any other Switzerland company, underlining its position as a leading technology company.

ABB has once again been ranked first among Switzerland companies in the 2020 European Patent Office (EPO) list of patent applicants. ABB already ranked first among patent holders in Switzerland in 2019 and 2014.

The annual list of patent applications is published by the European Patent Office in Munich, Germany, highlighting companies and countries with the largest number of patents worldwide. In 2020, Switzerland topped the world innovation list with 966 patent applications per 1 million inhabitants, followed by Sweden with 434 patent applications per 1 million people. The total number of patent applications registered in Switzerland was 8,112, slightly lower than in 2019, while the number of registered applications in Sweden increased to 4,423.

As part of its commitment to innovation, ABB has invested heavily in R&D, and by 2020, the company increased its R&D and digital spending to 4.8% of the Group's revenue (2019: 4.7%), equivalent to approximately $1.3 billion. The company employs around 7,000 R&D engineers worldwide, more than 60% of whom focus on software development and digitalization.

In addition, the company continues to work with more than 100 leading universities around the world. ABB collaborates with Carnegie Mellon University and Stanford University in United States, University of British Colombia in Canada, Imperial College London in United Kingdom, Institute of Technology in India, Tsinghua University in China, Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and ETH Zurich in Switzerland.

ABB is further leveraging its R&D ecosystem to strengthen innovation efforts and accelerate speed with strategic digital partners such as Microsoft, IBM and Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE) through its corporate venture capital arm, ABB Technology, and Ventures and its startup accelerator, SynerLeap.
