Each of the six new-build vessels will be equipped with three of the largest and most powerful Azipod® propulsion units for ships operating on ice. The 17-megawatt Azipod® mega unit will provide a total power of 51 megawatts (68,400 horsepower), enabling the vessel to safely traverse ice up to 2.1 m thick. In similar conditions, a similar ship would have needed the help of an icebreaker without ABB's leading technology.
Known for its unmatched performance, ABB Azipod® propulsion systems have become the industry standard for ships on ice. The electric drive motor of the Azipod® propulsion system is located in an underwater pod on the outside of the hull and can rotate 360 degrees to improve maneuverability, which is especially important for ships operating on ice. The new LNG carriers will be classified under ARC7 – the highest ice class for merchant ships.
The order follows the successful delivery of leading technology from ABB's 15-vessel series servicing the Yamal LNG project, one of the largest orders ever for ABB Maritime & Ports, completed in 2019.
Juha Koskela, President of ABB's Marine & Ports Division, said: "We are proud to see that our technology has once again been chosen for demanding operations in the Arctic. "We are committed to the growing Arctic maritime industry with our unrivalled technology that has proven over the years to enable safe, sustainable operations and ensure year-round cargo transportation on the Northern Sea Route."
Deliveries from 2023 will see the six vessels serve Arctic LNG 2, one of the largest industrial projects in the Arctic, with each vessel having the capacity to transport 170,000m3 of LNG.
ABB has supplied electric propulsion systems to more than 90 icebreakers or icebreakers. Options for Azipod® thrusters range from 1MW to 22MW. Azipod® technology has been proven to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20% compared to conventional shafted propulsion systems, playing a key role in developing ABB's strong position in environmentally friendly electric propulsion.
ABB's wide range of solutions for newbuild vessels also includes generators, switchboards, transformers, electric drives and propulsion control systems.
