ABB is working with its global strategic partner, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise (HPE), to develop technologies that significantly reduce the energy consumption of high-performance supercomputers while increasing their computing power and reliability.
The answers to some of society's most pressing challenges are hidden in massive amounts of data. The world's top research centers use supercomputers to find answers to some of the most complex questions, such as epidemic modeling, precision medicine, climate change, and quantum mechanics.
HPE's Cray supercomputer uses a tailored ABB high-voltage direct current (DC)1 power solution that can reduce copper usage by a factor of 14. Another environmental and efficiency advantage of HVDC is the drastically reduced power loss: up to 95%. In addition, connectivity solutions enable power supplies to be scaled up or down depending on the compute load, creating peak efficiency at light compute loads as well as when the system is fully loaded.
"ABB and HPE are paving the way for sustainable, high-performance data centers that can help humanity find answers to existential questions, such as predicting pandemics, tackling climate change and discovering new medicines," said Peter Raadsen, Head of Product Line at ABB.
"We need to be able to do more calculations with less resources and energy input," said Christopher Wellise, Chief Sustainability Officer at HPE. "At HPE, we are committed to accelerating our journey to a circular economy, part of which is innovative technologies to overcome energy and resource constraints."
Real-time monitoring of the thermal and power aspects of the supercomputer adds another benefit. HPE servers provide embedded power and thermal monitors on key components, and aggregate and report output data through HPE Integrated Lights Out (iLO), a proprietary remote server management software that enables seamless and secure configuration, monitoring, and updates of HPE servers. iLO allows users to monitor device utilization, power consumption, and heat output and take action to optimize operations through tools such as HPE OneView, HPE InfoSight, ABB Ability™ Data Center Automation, or 3rd Party Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM).
When combined with ABB Ability™ Data Center Automation, ABB's industrial solution for on-premise and hybrid cloud environments, HPE and ABB are able to reduce energy usage by up to 30% by automating the correlation between workloads and CPU dynamics through data center cooling.
HPE and ABB have been global strategic partners since November 2017. This relationship brings together ABB's best of digital products with HPE's leading innovative connectivity, secure edge computing and hybrid information technology (IT) solutions, and a new service model.
