ABB announced that Microsoft has joined its energy efficiency movement
The collaboration highlights a shared focus on reducing carbon emissions from operations and promoting industrial decarbonization
ABB announced today that Microsoft has joined its energy efficiency movement. Launched by ABB in March 2021, #energyefficiencymovement is a multi-stakeholder initiative to raise awareness and drive action to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions to combat climate change. Companies are invited to join the movement and make a public commitment as a way to inspire others to take action. Microsoft is one of the largest enterprise partners to join the program to date.
With soaring energy costs and pressure from customers, employees, and governments to make great strides in sustainability, energy efficiency across the industry is becoming increasingly urgent as companies look for decarbonization opportunities. A recent survey commissioned by ABB found that energy efficiency is clearly a top consideration for executives around the world. According to the report, 89% of industry leaders surveyed will increase their investment in the energy efficiency of their operations over the next five years, with 52% aiming to achieve net-zero emissions within that time frame.
"The greenest energy source is the one we never use," says Tarak Mehta, President of ABB's Sports business area. "45% of the world's electricity is used to power electric motors in buildings and industry, so improving energy efficiency is an important strategy in the fight against climate change. Digitally connected, energy-efficient solutions are critical to accelerating progress, and I'm excited that Microsoft and ABB are working together to improve the energy efficiency of our operations and those of our customers." ”
Elisabeth Brinton, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability at Microsoft, said: "Microsoft has joined the ABB Energy Efficiency Movement to help accelerate global progress in energy efficiency and carbon reduction. "Microsoft's commitment to become carbon negative by 2030 and 100% renewable electricity by 2025 is fully aligned with the goals of ABB and the campaign. This will further support our existing collaborations to help customers in industries such as manufacturing, transportation, and cities make better decisions at scale and drive meaningful efficiency gains." ”
For its part, ABB reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by approximately 28% year-on-year in 2021. In its comprehensive 2030 sustainability strategy, ABB has confirmed that it will achieve carbon neutrality within a decade. In addition to its own business, ABB has pledged to help its customers reduce their annual CO2 emissions by at least 100 megatons by 2030, which is equivalent to taking 30 million internal combustion engine vehicles off the road every year. Together with partners such as Microsoft, Germany Post DHL Group and Alfa Laval, the ABB Energy Efficiency Campaign brings together an ecosystem of like-minded industry leaders to accelerate decarbonization efforts.
Having recently celebrated five years of successful collaboration in the context of ABB AbilityTM, ABB's portfolio of digital solutions, the announcement on the energy efficiency movement further solidifies Microsoft and ABB's joint efforts to push the boundaries of technology to help customers solve sustainability issues. With Microsoft Azure's platform-as-a-service capabilities, as well as AI- and machine-learning-based analytics, cloud computing and edge technologies, ABB Ability solutions are powering a range of industrial use cases to help organizations optimize how they use energy power systems, facilities and other tangible assets. The new ABB white paper highlights some of the opportunities presented by digitalization and the Industrial Internet of Things to enable more energy-efficient operations.
