ABB will supply automation, electrification and cosmetic solutions for the Hydrogen Supply Chain (HESC) pilot project.
As part of the "world's first" HESC project, ABB is providing instrumentation and electrification solutions for Australia's first hydrogen liquefaction and loading terminal in Victoria's Port of Hastings. © Kawasaki Heavy Industries The HESC pilot project aims to safely and efficiently produce and transport clean hydrogen to Japan in Australia, one of the first international efforts to commercialise hydrogen liquefaction and delivery technology. The project aims to test hydrogen production through lignite gasification, hydrogen liquefaction, storage and loading onto the world's first specialized carrier for trans-Asia-Pacific delivery.
The landmark HESC pilot project has the potential to generate $2 billion in exports across the country, making Australia a global leader in hydrogen production. 1 The Australia government described the pilot project as a "critical step" for Australia to become an international leader in hydrogen production, with the Australia and Victorian governments pledging A$50 million (US$34 million) and A$500 million (US$343 million) each for the HESC pilot project. 2
Construction of the small pilot facility in Port Hastings began in 2019 and the pilot phase will be operational for about a year from 2020. ABB has secured orders in Australia and Japan, and has signed automation contracts in Australia with Kawasaki Heavy Industries in Japan.
Peter · Terwiesch, President of ABB's Industrial Automation business, said: "ABB is pleased to be working with this first-of-its-kind international pilot to commercialise Australia's hydrogen liquefaction and delivery technology and reduce emissions by supplying clean power to Japan. "As a skills leader, our high-quality products and solutions are complemented by our global experience and spirit of innovation."
Kevin Kosisko, Managing Director of ABB Power Industries, remeups: "Globally, we are using our talents in the power profession to support our customers in major projects that have the potential to provide greener and more sustainable power for tomorrow's world. ”

In Australia, ABB will supply and integrate electrical equipment, including low-voltage switchgear and switchboards, power quality components, UPS, end-to-end engineering, project management and commissioning services, as well as a loading terminal for new hydrogen liquefaction and Victoria Port Hastings. At the terminal, the hydrogen resulting from the Latrobe Valley lignite gasification will be liquefied and stored.

By 2050, hydrogen is expected to meet one-fifth of global power demand and generate a $2.5 trillion market. 3 Japan has the world's fifth-largest total power consumption, but the natural resource content of coal, oil and gas is low, so Japan sees hydrogen as meeting its future transportation and power generation needs. 4Liquefaction supports reduce hydrogen to 1/800th of its volume, allowing for more efficient long-distance transportation, and its prolonged use as a fuel is considered a potential solution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
