ABB will use Boliden-certified recycled and low-carbon copper in electric motors and magnetic stirring technology
Move supports ABB's goal of adopting a circular approach to at least 80% of its products and solutions by 2030
ABB is working with Sweden mining and smelting company Boliden in a strategic partnership to use low-carbon footprint copper in its electromagnetic mixing (EMS) equipment and high-efficiency electric motors. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions while driving the transition to a more circular economy.
The partnership with Boliden is an integral part of ABB's strategic ambition to reduce the environmental impact of raw materials used in its products by replacing them with low-carbon alternatives. In addition to the use of recycled copper, ABB is committed to increasing the use of recycled electrical steel (e-steel) and recycled aluminum. The move is also an important step in closing the loop, as ABB has designed its motors to be 98% recyclable, with the remaining 2% of the material available for incineration for heat recovery. Recycled copper, aluminum, and steel can save 75 to 95 percent of energy compared to original production.
"As part of our sustainability strategy for ABB2030, we aim to cover 80% of our products and solutions through a circular approach. The partnership with Boliden is an important step towards achieving this goal," said Ola Norén, Head of Metallurgical Products at ABB Process Industries, "By assessing deliveries by the end of the year, we will ensure that all our metallurgical products will use recycled hollow copper conductors from 2023."
"We want to achieve a more sustainable and resource-saving future, and with this partnership, our customers will not only be able to decarbonize by upgrading to energy-efficient motors, but they will also be able to install ABB technology, which has an improved environmental impact thanks to Boliden's copper," said Ulf Hellstrom, Managing Director of ABB Motion Sweden. "This is a great example of circular economy practices.
The partnership includes ABB's first order for Boliden-certified recycled copper through Finland metal fabrication specialist Luvata. The hollow wires made of this material will be used in ABB's EMS products for steel and aluminum manufacturing.
In addition, by 2023, ABB will purchase low-carbon and recycled copper from Boliden to meet its demand for IE5 ultra-ultra-high-efficiency synchronous reluctance and electric vehicle motors produced in Europe. The two companies have also signed a memorandum of understanding under which ABB will support Boliden in identifying inefficient low-voltage motors in its operating units. These motors can then be replaced by high-efficiency motors within the ABB Recycling Framework, which is recycled to provide raw materials for Boliden's recycled copper.
Copper is an important material for the manufacture of industrial electrical equipment, but its production is energy-intensive. To solve this problem, Boliden has developed low-carbon copper mined using fossil-free energy sources and produces copper from secondary raw materials for recycled products. The carbon footprint of these products is 65% lower than the industry average. A typical 75-kilowatt (kW) motor weighs up to 650 kilograms and may include 80 kilograms of copper. Using Boliden's copper, CO2 emissions can be reduced by around 200 kg per motor manufactured. Each agitator contains up to 2,700 kg of copper, saving up to 6,700 kg of CO2 per agitator.
