ABB Robotics has applied 3D Vision Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (VSLAM) technology to its autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) to upgrade the technology, enabling AMRs to make intelligent navigation decisions based on their surroundings. ABB's 3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) AMR uses AI-powered 3D vision technology to perform positioning and mapping functions, making production faster, more flexible, more advanced and more resilient. At the same time, it can also take on boring, dirty, and dangerous tasks, allowing people to focus on more valuable work.
3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) combines artificial intelligence and 3D vision technology. Compared to other AMR navigation technologies, it undoubtedly has more ** performance. With significant advantages over other forms of navigation, such as tape, QR codes, and traditional 2D laser SLAM technology that requires additional infrastructure to function, 3D vision SLAM (VSLAM) AMRs are being embraced by businesses to handle expanding production and distribution tasks.
According to the global head of ABB's robotics business unit, "the introduction of 3D vision SLAM (VSLAM) AMR has fundamentally enhanced the company's operational capabilities, improving overall speed, efficiency and flexibility, while enabling employees to do more valuable work. Our new AMRs offer greater autonomy and intelligence to operate safely in dynamic, densely populated environments. 3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) technology takes robotics to a whole new level of intelligence, extending robot applications from production and distribution to healthcare applications.
3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) generates a real-time 3D map of all objects in the surrounding area by means of a camera mounted on an AMR. The system can distinguish between fixed navigation references added to the map, such as floors, ceilings, and walls, and objects that move or change position, such as people or vehicles. Its cameras can detect and track natural features in the environment, allowing the AMR to dynamically adapt to its surroundings and plan the safest, ***** route to its destination. 3D vision SLAM (VSLAM) is different from 2D laser SLAM in that it does not require additional reference materials such as reflectors or markers, saves cost and space, and can achieve *** positioning within 3 mm.
Compared to 2D laser SLAM, 3D vision SLAM (VSLAM) technology does not require environmental adjustments, production shutdowns, or additional infrastructure, resulting in a 20% reduction in commissioning time, significantly reducing the time required to introduce new AMRs into an existing fleet. The technology can be widely used to remotely update AMR fleets. In addition, the technology only analyzes the raw data and does not save any visual images on the AMR or server, so it is very secure.
ABB has partnered with Sevensense, a leading provider of artificial intelligence and 3D vision technology, to develop the 3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) AMR. The technology will be applied to the next generation of ABB AMRs, i.e. on the AMR T702V from Q3 2023 and on the AMR P604V from Q4 2023. In addition, by 2025, ABB will launch other AMR products that include 3D vision SLAM (VSLAM). 3D Vision SLAM (VSLAM) technology has been deployed in the industrial projects of automotive and retail customers, and in the future, the intelligent modular production cells provided by AMRs will have the opportunity to replace their traditional production lines.
