ABB grid switchgear could be worth more than $100 million in the next 5 years
ABB has signed a five-year framework contract with Austria Power Grid (APG), the operator of the transmission system in Austria, for the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), which is likely to exceed $100 million, the largest grid expansion project in Austria to date. ABB will provide GIS for the construction of the transmission grid, which will help strengthen the infrastructure to gradually integrate more electricity generated from renewable sources.
Renewable energy sources are difficult to predict and cause load fluctuations. Its integration with the grid requires a robust and resilient transmission infrastructure. The network connects wind turbines in eastern Austria with pumped storage power plants in the western part of the country. It will also feed excess solar and wind energy to pumped storage power stations in the Alps, which act as "green batteries" to store electricity that can be harvested during periods of high demand.
Under the #mission2030 plan, Austria aims to achieve 100% of electricity consumption from renewable sources and a completely carbon-free society by 2030. This target also fulfills the EU's renewable energy target1 of 32% by 2030 and 75% by 2050. ABB's technology solutions act as a catalyst for a smarter, safer and greener grid.

"ABB's compact GIS will help integrate renewable energy while helping Austria meet its ambitious energy and climate goals."

From the end of 2019 to 2024, ABB's GIS will be installed in various substations across the country. GIS is a compact, metal-encapsulated switchgear that uses pressurized insulating gas for safe operation in confined spaces. It occupies only 10% of the space of an air-insulated switchgear substation, significantly reducing the equipment footprint and thus becoming an important driver of urbanization.
