ABB Robotics China was certified as a Global R&D Center by the Shanghai Municipal Government

On May 24, 2021, at the certification ceremony of the regional headquarters and R&D center of Shanghai multinational corporations, the ABB Robotics R&D Center in China was recognized as a global R&D center by the Shanghai Municipal Government, and Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng awarded it a plaque. With its world-leading scientific and technological innovation and research and development capabilities, ABB became one of the first multinational companies to receive this honor.

　　In order to encourage foreign investors to establish R&D centers in Shanghai and improve Shanghai's position as a global center for scientific and technological innovation, the Shanghai Municipal Government has recognized the global R&D centers for foreign investors for the first time. To be recognized, it is necessary to be a global-level R&D center established by a foreign investor in Shanghai, with a unique R&D skills platform, and play a key role in global R&D projects.

ABB came to Shanghai in 1994 to carry out robot business, and is the first multinational robot technology provider in China to realize the localization of the whole value chain business from development, production, sales, engineering, system integration to service. Over the past 16 years, ABB's R&D team in Shanghai, China, has continued to innovate and participated in the development of a series of world-class products, including the first Hongo-developed robot IRB 120 launched in 2009, the world's fastest 4-axis palletizing robot IRB 460 released in 2011, ABB's world's first dual-arm robot YuMi® that truly realizes human-robot collaboration launched in 2015, and the new generation of collaborative robots GoFa™ and SWIFTI™ launched in February this year.

ABB is building a robotics gigafactory in Shanghai, which is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2022, which will be ABB's most advanced, flexible and automated factory in the world – a cutting-edge center for making robots using robots. The Gigafactory will also establish a robust R&D center to help accelerate ABB's innovative development in the field of artificial intelligence.
