ABB and Amazon Web Services (AWS), a Amazon.com, Inc. company, announced a collaboration to develop cloud-based digital solutions for real-time fleet management of electric vehicles. The solution will optimize the efficient use of electric vehicles and accelerate the electrification of transportation fleets, helping global operators maintain 100% business continuity as they transition to all-electric.

The partnership combines eMobility leader ABB's extensive experience in energy management, charging technology, and e-mobility solutions with AWS's unmatched portfolio of cloud technology and software expertise.

Scheduled for the second half of 2021, the new platform will provide a tailored user experience in a single-view platform. From EV charging points to fleet data dashboards, it will make EV fleet management more efficient and maximize reliability.

Frank Muehlon, President of ABB's Electric Vehicle Division, commented: "ABB and AWS share a similar vision around the potential of electric vehicles to transform society. Our combined expertise supports the common goal of making EV fleet management simpler and more accessible. This new solution will revolutionize the world of electric vehicles, integrating EV hardware and software into a single ecosystem to provide a seamless user experience. We believe that by working together, we can give operators the confidence to make the switch to drive the adoption of electric fleets. ”

Currently, 23% of global energy-related greenhouse gas emissions are caused by the transport sector. 1 Electrification of transportation can significantly reduce CO2 levels, and large fleets can play a vital role, with nearly 400,000 electric vans and trucks on roads worldwide. 2 However, many fleets experience similar challenges when it comes to real-time vehicle and charging status information, EV maintenance, and charging infrastructure access management.

Today, most fleet operators opt for third-party charging management software. This provides limited functionality and the ability to tailor to the breadth of EV model range and charging infrastructure. Charging technology is evolving at an accelerated pace, so the adjustments required are costly and resource-intensive. As a result, fleet operators are looking for advanced software solutions that are scalable, secure, and easy to customize, combined with easy-to-manage charging hardware that allows them to plug and play.

To drive the advancement of EV fleets, ABB has established a pure-play joint venture in Berlin to develop tailored, scalable and cost-effective technologies for fleet operators that are available to all automotive OEMs. The new venture will work with AWS to design an interoperable fleet management solution for all vehicle types and charging infrastructure. Using machine learning and analytics, it will include a compelling set of features, including charging planning and real-time monitoring, as well as insights and actions on vehicle health and repair, as well as EV route optimization based on time of day, weather, and usage patterns.

"As the industry moves forward with fleet electrification, customers need reliable and intuitive services to help them adapt to new operating models and optimize the way they utilize their fleets. The collaboration between AWS and ABB combines our company's deep expertise in automotive, logistics, and electrification with leadership in the cloud to deliver a hardware-agnostic, intelligent electric fleet management solution," said Jon Allen, Director of Automotive Professional Services at AWS. "Together, ABB and AWS will bring the insight, agility and scale provided by the cloud to the EV industry and help our customers successfully transition to a low-emissions future."
