ABB traction equipment reduces the carbon footprint of rail operators and provides reliable and efficient rail transport in Berlin and Schleswig-Holstein.

ABB has won an order from Stadler, a Switzerland rail vehicle manufacturer, to provide energy-efficient and sustainable transport services for Nahverkehrsverbund Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (NAH.SH) in northern Germany and Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG) in the Germany capital. The scope of supply includes energy-saving traction converters and high-power lithium-ion batteries based on on-board energy storage systems. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.

Edgar Keller, President of ABB Traction, said: "We are proud to be the partner of choice for Stadler Germany and thank them for their trust in ABB's innovative traction equipment, which is at the forefront of the transition to more sustainable mobility. "Our energy storage systems are the perfect addition to our portfolio of high-efficiency traction converters. We can leverage our many years of expertise in the battery field, as well as our strong expertise in the traction sector, to translate it into innovative solutions for our customers. ”

ABB traction converters and lithium-ion-based energy storage systems will be installed on 55 new BEMU (Dual-Mode Electric Multi-Unit), the largest single order for BEMU in the world, for the local transportation authority NAH. SH uses. The battery modules will be produced at ABB's state-of-the-art, semi-automated plant in Baden, Switzerland, and then assembled into energy storage systems at the Traction plant in Minden, Germany.

The new trains will operate in a partially electrified network, with the longest non-electrified section being 80 kilometers long and so far serviced by diesel rolling stock. The use of high-power, long-life, inherently high safety level of energy storage system to ensure that the vehicle in all operating modes of the same performance, higher safety. The traction battery will be charged when the vehicle is operating at selected locations on electrified sections and routes. In addition, the energy storage system can be charged using a 400V or 1000V depot power supply. ABB's unique traction converter architecture ensures that all modes of operation and charging can be achieved without the need for additional power electronics that is not required for AC electric multiple unit (EMU) trains.

In the city of Berlin, the latest generation of traction converters will be installed on more than 600 new underground vehicles of the BVG. Replacing a 30-year-old fleet with modern vehicles equipped with custom ABB technology will meet the demand for more reliable and efficient service and help accommodate growing passenger numbers. ABB traction technology has proven to be very reliable in Stadler's existing BVG underground IK-type metro cars.

ABB has a long history of providing innovative and energy-efficient technologies to the railway sector, manufacturing and servicing components and subsystems in rail infrastructure and rolling stock in urban, intercity and high-speed networks. ABB also provides lifecycle services support, including maintenance and retrofitting for its large global installation base.
