The strategic partnership with Planar Motors Inc. (PMI) strengthens B&R's Adaptive Machine offering, integrating PMI's new production technology milestone in Open Adaptive Manufacturing
ABB is partnering with PMI in Canada to expand its machine automation offerings: integrating PMI's magnetic levitation technology into the company's Machine Automation Division (B&R) portfolio will accelerate the industry's shift from strictly linear production to open, adaptive manufacturing spaces. This will support B&R's customers in transitioning to highly flexible and precise manufacturing in response to a fundamental shift to mass production and shorter product lifecycles. In addition, ABB holds a significant stake in PMI as part of the agreement.
PMI was founded in 2017 as a startup headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. It is a global leader in magnetic levitation planar motors, designing and producing intelligent conveyor robot systems. PMI's smart shuttle technology has been integrated into B&R's portfolio and is available today under the product name ACOPOS 6D. It will provide B&R customers with the highest flexibility in manufacturing, assembly and packaging.
PMI's smart shuttle technology has been integrated into B&R's portfolio under the product name ACOPOS 6D
ACOPOS 6D IS A TRACKLESS PRODUCT TRANSPORT SYSTEM EQUIPPED WITH INTELLIGENT SHUTTLES THAT MOVE INDEPENDENTLY BETWEEN STATIONS WITHOUT THE CONSTRAINTS OF A RIGOROUS, SEQUENTIAL PRODUCTION PROCESS. The ACOPOS 6D shuttles are contactless, noiseless and precise, gliding freely on surfaces, accelerating and maneuvering in all directions in six degrees of freedom – they can even move vertically on walls.
With no mechanical friction or resulting contamination, the technology is particularly timely given that the current pandemic has accelerated the rapid shift in manufacturing, and the consequent need for sterile environments in industries that are accelerating automation, including food and beverage, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.
Similar to automated guided vehicle systems (AGVs), customers can benefit from the free movement of objects carried within or between multiple machines. With ACOPOS 6D, machines can manufacture different product variants or even completely different products at the same time, with each shuttle being able to deliver its individual product to its site in its own way in its own way among the numerous other shuttles in the production process to the needs of customized production.
"With ACOPOS 6D, we are pushing the boundaries of technology once again by leveraging our strong partner network. The capabilities of ACOPOS 6D provide unprecedented flexibility to a wide range of industries, enabling industries such as healthcare and pharmaceuticals to benefit from our flexible manufacturing solutions," said Sami Atiya, President of Robotics & Discrete Automation, ABB. "Through our partnership, we are complementing our industry-leading robotics and machine automation portfolio and cementing our position as the only company that offers a full suite of integrated hardware and software solutions from a single source for machine builders and industrial customers."
Xiaodong Lu, President and Co-Founder of PMI, said: "Partnering with ABB will ensure that we can further develop our technology and revolutionize industrial manufacturing. Our technology will work seamlessly with ABB's machine automation solutions, enabling customers to benefit from unmatched flexibility, precision and intelligence. We are excited to continue the success story of our technology with ABB's global reach and domain expertise." ”
B&R, a division of ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation business, is a global technology leader in machine automation. It combines state-of-the-art technology with advanced engineering to provide customers in almost all industries with complete solutions for machine and factory automation, motion control, HMI and integrated safety technology.
