Singapore's National Water Authority PUB has awarded ABB a contract worth approximately US$30 million (S$40.5 million) to provide a complete plant-wide monitoring system for the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant (WRP).
Footprint 30% more compact than a conventional plant, the Tuas WRP is a key component of the second phase of Singapore's Deep Tunnel Wastewater System (DTSS), which is expected to cost around US$4.8 billion (S$6.5 billion). Tuas WRP will receive the wastewater stream from Western Singapore through two separate deep tunnels and apply membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to treat and purify 650,000m3/day of domestic water to produce NEWater, with an additional 150,000m3/day of used industrial water treated and sent back to industrial reuse. MBR is a filtration process in which membranes are used to separate different substances.
Considered one of the world's most water-scarce countries with no natural water sources, Singapore is investing heavily in technology to help it provide high-quality water to its growing population and businesses of 5.69 million in the future.
Peter Terwiesch, President of ABB Industrial Automation, said: "Singapore currently needs about 430 million gallons of water per day, of which 45% is used by households and the rest by industry. The demand for water is expected to nearly double by 2060. To meet this demand, the water cycle must be shut down and every drop of water must be collected, treated, and reused. We are pleased to support the task of treating and purifying water at the Tuas Water Reclamation Plant, while helping to manage and conserve the energy required in the process. ”
Leveraging its ABB Ability™ 800xA control platform and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), ABB will deploy a process control system across multiple facilities in the field. The entire system integrates more than 100,000 input/output signals from different assets, including pumping stations, wet weather facilities, biosolids, domestic and industrial fluid modules, and finished water storage, into a unified control platform, providing a complete operational visibility network across the plant. ABB will also provide advanced process control solutions to improve plant performance and efficiency.
Brandon Spencer, President of ABB Energy Industries, commented: "The Tuas Water Reclamation Plant was considered to be a compact and energy-self-sufficient unit. Our solution will enable a small group of operators in the field to have full visibility into operations and access to all process data to make decisions to optimize performance in real time. ”
Combining a power monitoring system with a building management system, operators will be able to monitor ventilation and air conditioning systems and, more importantly, manage energy use throughout the site.
Alarm monitoring and security systems will also be deployed to help ensure industrial controls, including cybersecurity solutions to assess threats and test vulnerabilities to meet Singapore's stringent cybersecurity requirements. To support the successful implementation and delivery of all systems, operator simulator training will be provided to operators. The ABB service team will provide ongoing asset, system monitoring and preventive maintenance for 8 years after the construction is completed.
Singapore is internationally recognised as a model city for integrated water management. Its reborn water is a high-grade reclaimed water made from treated used water that is further purified using advanced membrane technology and UV disinfection, making it ultra-clean and safe to drink. It is a core pillar of sustainable water development in Singapore. The Tuas Water Reclamation Plant is part of a mixed-use development called Tuas Nexus. Tuas Nexus is the world's first greenfield development that integrates two complex facilities that bring together water and solid waste treatment processes to harness the synergies of the water-energy-waste relationship.
