ABB signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Hydrogène de France to jointly manufacture megawatt-class fuel cell systems capable of powering ocean-going vessels
The memorandum of understanding between ABB and hydrogen technology specialist Hydrogène de France (HDF) envisages close cooperation in the assembly and production of fuel cell power plants for marine applications.
Building on the existing collaboration with Ballard Power Systems, a leading global provider of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell solutions, announced on June 27, 2018, ABB and HDF intend to optimize fuel cell manufacturing capabilities for marine vessels. The new system will be based on a megawatt-scale fuel cell power plant jointly developed by ABB and Ballard and will be produced at HDF's new plant in Bordeaux, France.
Fuel cells convert the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity through an electrochemical reaction. By using renewable energy sources to produce hydrogen, the entire energy chain can be made clean.
"HDF is pleased to partner with ABB to assemble and produce megawatt-scale fuel cell systems for the marine market based on Ballard technology," said Damien Havard, CEO of HDF.
Juha Koskela, Managing Director of ABB Marine & Ports, said: "As the demand for solutions that enable sustainable and responsible shipping continues to grow, we believe fuel cells will play an important role in helping the marine industry meet its CO2 reduction goals. "Signing a Memorandum of Understanding with HDF brings us closer to making this technology available to power ocean-going vessels."
With shipping accounting for around 2.5% of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions, there is increasing pressure on the shipping industry to transition to more sustainable energy sources. The International Maritime Organization, the UN agency responsible for regulating shipping, has set a global target to reduce annual emissions by at least 50% by 2050 from 2008 levels.
ABB is already leading the way in the collaborative development of marine fuel cell systems among alternative emission-free technologies. Fuel cells are widely recognized as one of the most promising solutions for reducing harmful pollutants. Today, this zero-emission technology is already capable of powering ships traveling short distances and supporting the ancillary energy needs of larger vessels.
ABB's eco-efficiency portfolio, which enables sustainable smart cities, industrial and transportation systems to mitigate climate change and conserve non-renewable resources, accounted for 57% of total revenue in 2019. The company is on track to reach 60% of revenue in 2019. End of 2020.
