ABB's Terra 184 charger supports the modernization of Japan's EV charging infrastructure

High-power compact chargers will be spread all over the country, providing users with fast and convenient charging options anytime, anywhere

ABB's new Terra 184 EV charger has been selected by Japan's e-Mobility Power Co., Inc. (eMP) to modernize the infrastructure of the country's EV market and accelerate the country's transition to sustainable mobility. Financial details of the order were not disclosed.

The project is part of a broader push by Japan to increase the share of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids from 1% in 2018 to 20-30% by 2030.

eMP is a joint venture between TEPCO Holdings (TEPCO) and Chubu Electric Power, two of Japan's largest utilities.

To encourage the adoption of electric vehicles, eMP is working to reduce charging congestion and increase the accessibility of charging stations, allowing users to charge their vehicles anytime, anywhere. To modernize the EV charging infrastructure, eMP will replace outdated chargers with more than 250 Terra 184 units. Deliveries are scheduled to begin this fall.

eMP will install chargers in stores located on roadsides, along highways, and in other public places, providing users with quick and easy access. ABB's fast and compact Terra 184 charger can charge up to two electric vehicles at the same time, making it ideal for Japan cities.

The Terra 184 can also be connected via ABB Ability™ – ABB's unified, cross-industry, digital offering, from device to edge to cloud – for centralized control and rapid global software updates and maintenance services, which are critical for the rapid deployment of EV charging infrastructure.

The Terra 184 is the latest addition to ABB's best-selling Terra series of chargers, supporting all charging standards on the market, including CCS, CHAdeMO and AC. With highly customizable features such as cable management systems, screens, and credit card payment terminals, the Terra 184 offers maximum charging convenience for a wide range of EV users.

To date, Japan has sold more than 250,000 pure electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles, of which 7,000 high-power chargers (> 20kW) and 18,000 chargers (3-6kW) are in operation.
