Round 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will showcase electric vehicles in North Africa
ABB supports Morocco in achieving its sustainability goals
The latest video from ABB's FIA Girls on Track series
This weekend, ABB returns to Marrakech for the fifth time in the FIA Formula E World Championship, and it's sure to be a great race.
The 22 drivers will compete in the Moulay El Hassan circuit, an international circuit in the 12-lap Agdal district of Marrakech and a total length of 2.99 kilometers, in the shadow of the red walls. The circuit is named after the Crown Prince of Morocco and is partly made up of a permanent track and roads around the hotel area. This combination guarantees a variety of challenges for teams and riders.
Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at ABB, said: "Marrakech has always been an iconic venue for ABB as it was the first race we hosted as a championship partner in 2018. Morocco's ambitious climate protection goals align perfectly with ABB's goals and are excited to be back here again to showcase technologies that can help us achieve a more sustainable future." ”
ABB has been operating in Morocco since 1980 and has become a key supplier of electrification, robotics, motion control, industrial automation and electrical networks. ABB works closely with Morocco to support its sustainability strategy, which aims to reduce energy consumption by 15% by 2030 and increase the share of renewable energy. In 2009, 1.7% of electricity came from renewable sources. By 2015, this rose to 34% and is expected to reach 52% by 2030.
ABB supports the country's Sustainable Development Goals through several projects. The company recently signed a framework agreement to provide the first public fast-charging infrastructure for Afriquia, Morocco's largest oil and gas distributor. It has more than 480 petrol stations across the country, and following the success of the first seven DC 50kw chargers provided by ABB, Afriquia will deploy more ABB chargers at its petrol stations.
Morocco mining group Managem has also signed a contract with ABB to provide digital solutions in Africa. In this major project, ABB will first install ABB Ability™ Operations Management System (OMS) and Advanced Process Control (APC) solutions at two mines before expanding to all of the company's operations – a total of 11 brownfield sites and two greenfield. ABB's technology will help improve productivity and operational efficiency while supporting the digital transformation of all Managem underground and open pit mines.
To further support ABB's partnership with FIA Girls on Track, ABB has released a new video celebrating women in the Formula E paddock in its series, featuring Andrea Ackroyd, Alexander Sims Performance Engineer at Mahindra Racing. This video explores her path into engineering, her career so far, and the changes she's seen in attitudes towards women in the sport.
Following Marrakech, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will return to New York City on July 16-17 for rounds 11 and 12.
