This weekend, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will travel to Seoul, Korea, for the final two races of Season 8 and Sunday's 100th race, marking a major milestone for the sport.

The 22-turn, 2.618-kilometer track surrounds the Jamsil Olympic Stadium and Sports Complex, where the 1988 Summer Olympics were held. This is the tournament's first visit to Korea and is expected to be an action-packed weekend, with the Seoul Festival also taking place from August 10 to 14. The five-day event includes K-pop concerts, shopping events, and the E-Prix itself.

On the occasion of ABB's first Formula E visit to Seoul, ABB Korea today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korea Green Campus Initiative Association ('KAGCI'). Under the agreement, ABB Korea will help accelerate the transformation of universities across the country from traditional to energy-efficient buildings. This will be achieved through the introduction of ICT systems to monitor and control air conditioning, lighting, and energy use to improve efficiency. The first universities to benefit will be Korea University in Seoul and Hanshin University in Osan in Gyeonggi Province.

ABB has already promoted the implementation of smart building technologies in a series of projects across Korea, such as Jeju Shinhwa World, a resort located in the southwest of Jeju Island. ABB supplied the ABB KNX control system for 2,000 hotel rooms in the resort, which covers approximately 2.5 million square meters and has a capacity of 30,000 people per day. ABB's proven KNX technology is recognized as the world's first open standard for controlling all types of smart buildings – industrial, commercial or residential. The entire building control system will be installed throughout the hotel to control elements such as temperature and lighting, saving energy and costs.

Korea is committed to driving the energy transition in the world's 10th largest economy, increasing the share of renewable electricity to 20% by 2030 and 30-35% by 2040, and at ABB we have the technology to really help drive that change. ”

ABB supports Doosan Energy, which was selected as the supervisory company to develop an 8MW high-capacity offshore wind turbine supported by the Korea Energy Technology Research Institute as a national project and supported by the Korea government. The project took about four years and involved multiple industries, schools and institutions in Korea. As a development partner, ABB provides electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical designs, in addition to generator stator and rotor active components for prototypes.

Another area where the country is pushing the boundaries of technology is robotics. Korea has the highest level of robotization in the world, with 932 industrial robots per 10,000 workers – a number that has grown by 10% every year since 2015. Traditionally, they have been mainly used in the manufacturing industry, especially in the automotive industry, where thousands of ABB robots are used in applications such as stamping, casting and painting process automation. However, this is changing, and robots are now used in a wide range of applications and industries. ABB's new video describes the use of cobots in the service, telecommunications and cosmetics industries.
