The new collaboration and a donation of 2.5 million Switzerland francs will help position Switzerland as one of the world's leading robotics research centers.
As part of ETH RobotX's strategic plan, ABB and ETH Zurich, Switzerland's leading research university, have established their long-standing partnership across multiple disciplines, expanding their partnership into robotics research. RobotX was launched in 2019 with the aim of positioning ETH as the world's top robotics research institution.
As part of the RobotX Industry Alliance Program, ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation business will support ETH's ambitious plans with its leading in-house robotics expertise, combining capabilities into a single platform designed to nurture new talent and attract global experts to advance a range of future technologies, including mobile robots.
"We are excited to partner with ETH as it is consistently ranked as the world's top university in engineering and technology. Our partnership expands our global innovation ecosystem, enabling us to work with the brightest minds to drive the future of robotics and unlock the potential of automation for our customers," said Sami Atiya, President of ABB Robotics & Discrete Automation.
"Close collaboration between ETH and industry partners, including ABB Robotics, is essential to establish Switzerland as a leading robotics research center. With RobotX, we can enable interdisciplinary research across ETH while establishing new ways of collaborating with industry affiliation programs, open lab spaces, and sabbatical programs for researchers from our industry partners," said Prof. Joël Mesot, President of ETH Zurich.
The collaboration between ABB Robotics and ETH builds on an existing collaboration with ABB in 2014. To strengthen its initial 10-year commitment with ETH, ABB has now targeted 2.5 million Switzerland francs to support the RobotX initiative.
ABB has collaborated with ETH on the university's research in the field of building and construction robot manufacturing, and has helped establish the world's first digital manufacturing lab for collaborative robots in the construction field held at the ETH Institute of Building Technology. ABB, along with ETH, is also part of a project initiated by Schindler, one of the world's leading suppliers of elevators and escalators, to install automated, independently operated robotic mounting systems for elevators, with the aim of improving the quality of elevator installers and simplifying working conditions.
As part of the company's technology ecosystem, ABB is committed to supporting and partnering with more than 100 universities, including ETH. These collaborations are invaluable in strengthening the links between academia and industry, which are essential for students' future of innovation and employment. ABB's long-standing relationship with ETH includes technical contributions, university spin-off collaborations, and partnerships with universities to bring education to developing countries.
