ABB today officially opened a new plant for energy storage systems for mobile applications in Baden, Switzerland, in the presence of customers, politicians and media representatives. The energy storage system will be used in railways, electric buses/trolleybuses, and electric trucks. The facility represents an important investment in Switzerland as a production site and provides added value for domestic and international applications.
ABB has already received orders for energy storage systems from several automakers in different countries. Among other applications, they will be used in new trolleybuses in cities such as Zurich, Lausanne and Fribourg in Switzerland.
Energy storage systems are a key technology for sustainable mobility in the future and play an important role in the electrification and decarbonization of road and rail transport: Efficient energy storage systems are essential for the operation of electric buses and electric trucks and allow, for example, the braking energy generated through recovery to be stored. In addition, energy storage systems increase the flexibility of trolleybuses, as they can travel long distances without overhead lines, thanks to this technology.
Unlike Switzerland, many other European countries still have countless non-electrified railway lines. The integration of energy storage systems makes it possible to convert diesel trainsets to diesel hybrid vehicles, thereby reducing CO2 emissions by 30% and making it possible to achieve significant energy savings through recycling. Energy storage systems offer many options for transport operators to retrofit their fleets for more sustainable mobility.
"Our energy storage system production facility in Baden only strengthens our technological and market leadership in the field of sustainable mobility. For more than 100 years, we've been making progress with our solutions. This allows us to offer the entire powertrain from a single source, including energy storage solutions for rail, electric bus, trolleybus and electric truck applications," says Robert Itschner, CEO of ABB Switzerland and local business manager for Sports.
The battery cells are assembled in production into standardized battery modules. These are combined into energy storage systems and configured according to the specific application. The product uses the latest lithium-ion technology and is characterized by high energy and power density as well as a long service life even under high loads. They are designed to be safe and energy efficient.
Two ABB robots are used in the production process to ensure high safety and quality requirements: one places the battery cells in the module housing, and the other connects them using a high-precision laser welding process. All data in the production process is recorded digitally and continuously.
ABB has many years of experience in energy storage systems for various applications, such as power grids or solar energy systems. Baden was chosen as a production site for a number of reasons, including its proximity to the ABB Center of Excellence for Traction Converters in Turgi and the ABB Corporate Research Center in Dättwil.
