CEJN is one of Sweden's leading manufacturers of quick couplings for the connection of air, gas and hydraulic pipes in passenger cars, firefighting equipment, wind turbines and agriculture. CEJN has been using industrial robots to install its products for many years, but the fitting and assembling of fine threads between parts has always been a difficult and complex task to automate.
"The assembly method for most of our products is the same, so the installation mission is important to us. But the problem is that our wrists are strained by this long-term installation mission. So, we're always looking for robots that can accomplish this specific mission," said Philip · Palmqvist, Operations Manager at CEJN.
When Palmqvist first saw the YuMi cobot working with humans to assemble light fixtures without a safety fence at a trade show, Palmqvist came up with the idea of automating parts assembly using human-robot collaboration at CEJN.
CEJN's collaborative journey began with a pilot study. "We tested whether the robot could complete the mission according to our ideas, and created a complete set of use programs with our products to test production. This is a very good time to see how the robot works on the operation line. After passing the test, we decided to contribute. Pamquist said.
In the pilot study, 3D printing is indispensable, with the help of 3D printing, we have completed the accurate testing and fine-tuning of different robot grippers. "The grippers that were produced during the test are now directly used in production," adds Palmqvist. The solution also includes an integrated vision system that can be used to locate parts and ensure assembly quality.
The YuMi robot provides economic viability for production in high-income countries. "The entire manufacturing industry in Europe, including the connector industry, needs to constantly strive to improve power and competitiveness and to avoid costly strain injuries for employees. We think it would be an advantage to be able to have production and development in the same location and in the same building. Cobots have always been key to improving competitiveness and helping to reduce production costs, which is crucial for our ability to start production in Sweden," says Gunnar · Helisius, Production Manager at CEJN.
With the help of the YuMi robot, CEJN has also been able to increase the flexibility of production: "Our current station is extremely flexible. When we produce small batches, we can equip the station with installers only, and when the output value is added, we can equip a cobot next to the installers and let them operate the station together. As a result, we are able to flexibly handle small and large batches of production, and reduce the cost of large-scale production above medium and large quantities," said the production manager.
