At the beginning of this year, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Cyberspace Administration of the People's Republic of China, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the National Energy Administration jointly issued a notice agreeing to start the construction of national computing hub nodes in eight places, including Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Yangtze River Delta, Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Chengdu-Chongqing, Inner Mongolia, Guizhou, Gansu and Ningxia, and planned 10 national data center clusters, and the "Eastern Data and Western Computing" project was officially launched.
Under the guidance of policies such as the 14th Five-Year Plan and the "Eastern Data and Western Computing", data centers, as the underlying support of the digital economy, have also ushered in a golden age of development. Opportunities and challenges coexist, and it is incumbent on data centers, as a high-energy industry, to promote carbon neutrality in an orderly manner.
Under the influence of various factors, how to achieve the "fish and bear's paw" of "guaranteed development" and "carbon neutrality" in the data center industry has become the focus of attention of upstream and downstream enterprises in the industry.
01. Data centers face challenges in power supply and distribution
As an indispensable energy source for data centers, under the influence of policies such as "Eastern Data and Western Computing" and "Carbon Neutrality", new requirements and greater challenges have been put forward for the power supply and distribution system of data centers. In view of the development trend of power supply and distribution in data centers, how to realize digitalization and digital intelligence in power supply and distribution of data centers, IDC reporters interviewed Zhao Yongzhan, President of ABB Electric China.
As an international leading enterprise in the electrical industry, ABB has been deeply involved in China's important national strategic projects such as West-to-East Power Transmission and South-to-North Water Diversion. Zhao Yongzhan said that in ABB's view, the "Eastern Data and Western Computing" project will also be a long-term strategic project with a large investment scale and a long construction period, similar to the West-to-East Power Transmission Project and the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.
"On the one hand, compared with the West-to-East Power Transmission and South-to-North Water Diversion, the 'Eastern Data and Western Computing' project has fewer civil works, and on the other hand, in the context of rapid digital transformation, the demand for computing power is growing geometrically, so as an important computing infrastructure, the data center has extremely high requirements for the speed of the construction period." Zhao Yongzhan emphasized.
With the gradual advancement of the "Eastern Data and Western Computing" project and the deepening of the carbon neutrality process, the energy supply of data centers is no longer simply from thermal power, and more and more applications such as wind power, hydropower, and photovoltaic power supply and distribution have also made the power supply and distribution of data centers more and more complex, and the power supply and distribution system of data centers is facing more challenges, and the power distribution of data centers has entered an era of change. Zhao Yongzhan said that no matter where the power comes from, there is only one goal for the power supply and distribution of data centers - safety and stability, "At this stage, in the case of more and more renewable energy applications, how to ensure the 'stable' application of these 'unstable' renewable energy sources in the data center has become a 'top priority'." Zhao Yongzhan emphasized.
At the same time, in Zhao Yongzhan's view, in addition to higher requirements for the deployment speed, the "Eastern Data and Western Computing" project has put forward higher requirements for the environmental protection, use efficiency, and intensification of equipment.
02. Digitalization empowers IDC power supply and distribution
With the deepening of the digital transformation process of various industries, data centers, which are an important support for the digital transformation of various industries, are also ushering in a critical period of digital transformation. The transformation from a traditional data center to a new data center covers the entire life cycle of a data center, which naturally includes the most important areas of power supply and distribution for data centers.
Zhao Yongzhan said that the digitalization and digital intelligence of power supply and distribution in data centers should also focus on safety and reliability, and improve power supply efficiency. "ABB has been making a layout in the digitalization of power distribution for a long time, based on safety and reliability, and promoting the digitalization process of power distribution in an orderly manner, which is not only limited to the data center industry, but also has digital needs on the load side." Zhao Yongzhan emphasized.
In Zhao Yongzhan's view, the digitalization of power supply and distribution in data centers should be considered from two aspects. First of all, it requires long-term technical accumulation of products, improving the digital level of power supply and distribution products themselves, collecting more data, and even data processing. "In the future, in the process of data center operation, the difficulty of operation and maintenance will be greatly reduced through digital means, so as to improve the operational efficiency of the entire data center, and further reduce operating costs through more refined data analysis." When talking about the overall digital goal of the data center, Zhao Yongzhan clearly pointed out.
In response to the digital needs of power supply and distribution in data centers, ABB has also made a layout in the research and development and iteration of products and solutions. According to Zhao Yongzhan, ABB starts from two levels: asset management and energy management.
In terms of asset management, ABB has greatly reduced O&M costs, reduced the frequency of regular inspections through the digitalization of power distribution equipment products, and achieved "predictable" product maintenance and repair through implanted algorithms, which not only reduced O&M costs, but also reduced the incidence of accidents, thereby improving the stability of data centers.
At the level of energy management, Zhao Yongzhan said that the digitalization of products is only the beginning of the digitalization of the power supply and distribution system of the data center, and it is more important to establish a perfect system, "using the perfect system to create a digital closed loop on the energy supply side and the demand side, and at the same time, it is also necessary to combine the application of new energy and other levels to finally realize the digitalization and digital intelligence of energy management." Zhao Yongzhan pointed out.
03. Flexible, stable and low-carbon together
Under the guidance of policies such as "Eastern Data and Western Computing", more and higher requirements have been put forward for data centers, and modularization has become one of the options for rapid and low-carbon deployment of data centers, and the same is true for the field of power supply and distribution of data centers.
ABB has made extensive use of modularity in its solutions, which are easily scalable. ABB, which has been deeply involved in the industry for many years, always puts safety and stability first, which can be said to be very applicable to data centers with high requirements for uninterrupted power supply and security.
Not only that, in the context of the "dual carbon" strategy, as a high-energy data center industry, it is incumbent on it to promote the process of carbon neutrality in an orderly manner. In this regard, Zhao Yongzhan said, "Taking UPS as an example, ABB's UPS can achieve an efficiency of more than 97%, and at the same time, we are further optimizing our products, and products that have been improved to 98% and above efficiency will soon be available to you." Zhao Yongzhan emphasized.
It is worth noting that ABB also released an earlier sustainability report, which showed that CO2 emissions in 2021 were reduced by 39% compared to the 2019 baseline. In response to ABB's carbon neutrality plan, Zhao Yongzhan said that ABB also officially launched a carbon neutrality schedule in 2020, striving to achieve carbon neutrality at the global operational level by 2030.
As a leading enterprise in power and automation technology, ABB is helping data centers achieve faster and greener development, and is also promoting its own green, low-carbon and sustainable development process in an orderly manner, contributing to the carbon neutrality of the entire industry.
