For the first time, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is being raced on an adapted version of the Monaco circuit – a fitting backdrop to highlight the latest developments in electric vehicle technology

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship returns to the Principality of Principality of Monaco this weekend with a modified version of the full iconic track for the first time thanks to improved car performance and range. The event will follow strict COVID-19 protocols, which have been developed under the guidance of the relevant authorities to enable them to be carried out in a safe and responsible manner.

This year, 24 drivers will test their skills with 19 turns on a fast and narrow 3.32-kilometer street circuit that includes famous corners such as Casino Square, Mirabeau, Grand Hotel Hairpin and Portier. Held every two years, the Monaco eGrand Prix brings the thrill of all-electric racing to one of the world's most recognizable landscapes. ABB ambassador Sébastien Buemi is the most successful driver on the streets of Formula E Monaco, winning two of the three races.

Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer, ABB, said: "Sustainability is at the heart of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. This weekend in Monaco, the collection will once again actively promote electric vehicles and alternative energy solutions to contribute to the reduction of air pollution and the fight against global climate change. ”

The use of the retrofitted full circuit underscores the speed at which EV technology is evolving – and is also being highlighted in the latest solutions ABB is implementing to help create a more sustainable future. These electric vehicles and sustainability advancements will be on display not only on the legendary streets of Monte Carlo, but also in the port around which Formula E will revolve: sustainable shipping is another technology where ABB is demonstrating its global leadership. Through the development of electric propulsion, data-driven decision support and integrated ship-to-shore solutions, ABB is driving the zero-emission marine industry.

Juha Koskela, President of ABB's Marine & Ports Division, said: "ABB's maritime technology provides shipowners with greater efficiency and reliability, while preparing ships for future demand, ultimately enabling them to operate more sustainably. One example of this is the Azipod® electric propulsion system, one of our most transformative technology solutions for the marine industry, which celebrates its 30th anniversary of operation this year. ”

Azipod® units save fuel and reduce emissions. Their design is based on an electric motor, mounted in a pod suspended under the hull and capable of rotating 360 degrees. The Azipod® unit improves maneuverability, efficiency, and usable space on board. Their increasing application in the ever-changing marine industry has brought it higher performance while enabling the cruise industry to save the equivalent of 1,000,000 tons of fuel.

When in port, a vessel's emissions can have a significant impact on air quality, as diesel generators are still often used to charge the batteries of hybrid ships. ABB's Shore Connection can help achieve sustainability from the grid to the propeller by providing onshore power generation.

ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an international racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its technology supports events on city street circuits around the world. ABB entered the EV market in 2010 and today sells more than 400,000 EV chargers in more than 85 markets; More than 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 AC chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.
