• ABB Formula E charging equipment up to 160kW
• Two cars can be charged at the same time before the race, reducing footprint and improving sustainability
ABB recently unveiled the charging technology that will be used in the ninth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. ABB will be the official charging supplier for the series.
ABB worked with engineers from FIA and FE to develop a compact, reliable and safe charging solution for racing cars. The solution will charge the new Gen3 cars before and during the race. ABB's Formula E charging equipment is rugged, customizable and ergonomically designed for easy transport and installation worldwide.
Each charging unit has a power of up to 160 kW and is capable of charging two cars at the same time at 80 kW each before the race. Enables racing teams to benefit from the charging unit's "dual car charging" feature, which significantly reduces the footprint of the charging equipment. Since this design eliminates the need for a separate charging unit for each race car, transport emissions can be significantly reduced.
As a leader in EV charging infrastructure, ABB's charging equipment uses advanced charging technology. The technology has been proven in road vehicle charging applications and is able to withstand the demanding motorsport environment. ABB's charging equipment is compatible and consistent, adapting it to the local power system wherever it is used in the world.
Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-Mobility, said: "We are excited to bring our innovative charging solutions to the world's most prestigious electric vehicle stage – the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship – and thus continue to push the event as a testbed for new technologies that are more sustainable. Charging support for the Gen3 allows us to gain valuable test information for charging in a fast-paced, competitive environment. We will apply this experience and knowledge to the continuous improvement of ABB's charging equipment for use by our customers and consumers. ”
Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E Formula E, said: "Technological advancement and sustainable innovation are the cornerstones of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. "Our partnership with ABB is based on a shared commitment to advancing e-mobility, and we are delighted that ABB will provide advanced charging equipment for our third generation of racing cars (gen3)." ABB's mobile fast charging equipment sets the industry standard and will be a key charging infrastructure for Formula E events. We look forward to showcasing ABB's leading charging products under rigorous competition standards, and thus proving that high performance and sustainability can coexist without contradiction." ”
ABB is a global leader in EV charging infrastructure. ABB entered the electric vehicle market in 2010 and today has sold more than 40,000 DC fast chargers and 800,000 AC chargers in more than 85 markets worldwide, including those sold through Chargedot.
