The country is on track to meet ambitious climate targets
The installation of 1000 ABB fast chargers in Norway represents an important milestone for the country in its ambitious journey towards a zero-emission economy.
Norway's ambitious plans to move away from fossil fuels include a target to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and to achieve zero emissions for all new cars sold from 2025 onwards. The policy is supported by generous incentives for electric vehicles (EVs), such as exemptions from purchase taxes, reduced tolls, and ferry fares.
ABB has played a key role in helping Norway transition to a zero-emission society, and the recent installation of the 1,000th high-power charger in the western city of Bergen continues to demonstrate ABB's commitment to ambitious sustainability goals. The Terra HP is capable of providing a range of 200 km in just 8 minutes.
Sustainable mobility
Norway has become one of the most advanced EV societies in the world: EVs account for 10% of the country's 3 million cars – a ratio even higher than other EV-friendly countries like Netherlands and Sweden.
This accelerating trend has led to all other new car sales in Norway being fully electric. Since the country's energy mix is about 98% renewable energy, mainly from hydropower, the current reduction in CO2° emissions by electric vehicles is equivalent to about 600,000 tons per year.
The dramatic increase in the ownership and use of electric vehicles has contributed to the rapid development of traditional gas stations. Many now offer EV charging, and at busy stations, such as one of Shell's most frequented stations, every third "full" car is now electric. The Circle K station is also the first in the world to replace a traditional air pump with a fast charger from ABB.
Frank Muehlon, Global Business Leader of E-Mobility Infrastructure Solutions at ABB, said: "We are very proud of our role in supporting Norway's energy revolution. Norway has pioneered the adoption of electric vehicles and a green public transport network, and we believe other European countries will see it as a positive blueprint for sustainable infrastructure. ”
Electric buses and zero-emission logistics and shipping
ABB is a global leader in electric vehicle infrastructure, providing a full range of charging and electrification solutions for electric vehicles, electric and hybrid buses, as well as ships and railways. The company already powers 150 electric buses in Norway – about half of the country's electric fleet. In addition, ABB provides charging infrastructure and services for ASKO, Norway's largest grocery wholesaler, for its growing fleet of electric trucks.
ABB's e-mobility support also covers the maritime industry in Norway. Examples include shore-to-ship power solutions at major cruise and ferry ports and supply bases across the country, which have helped reduce emissions equivalent to more than 10,000 vehicles. On Oslo's busiest passenger ferry route, ABB equipment on board helps reduce emissions by the equivalent of 3,000 cars, while the ABB-powered cruise ship Vision of the Fjord carries visitors on a quiet, zero-emission cruise in the country's iconic fjords.
ABB entered the EV charging market in 2010 and has sold more than 17,000 ABB DC fast chargers in 80 countries to date. Its commitment to advancing electric vehicles is most clearly demonstrated through its championship partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which is now in its fourth season. Starting with Season 9, in 2022-23, ABB will be the official charging provider for the championship.
