Today, the EU Ecodesign Regulation 2019/1781 for low-voltage induction motors and variable speed drives comes into force, paving the way for millions of motor drive applications to reduce energy consumption.
Although electric motors consume about 45% of the world's electricity, they often go unseen during use. The problem is that too many motor drive systems in use are inefficient, which is why ABB is working with customers, partners, academia and government to raise awareness of how much energy can be saved by high-efficiency motors and drives. The solution ABB offers today exceeds not only the regulatory requirements that come into effect today, but also those scheduled for July 2023, when the ecodesign regulations will be further expanded.
In the podcast, Morten shares the popularity of motors and drives in our daily lives and how they can significantly improve energy efficiency.
The invisible network around us
"Even if you don't realize it, electric sports touch your life multiple times a day. Motors and drives are everywhere, from ensuring clean water reaches your home and running trains, to building, construction, and the production of the food you eat. ”
"That's why we have more than 300 million motors, drive systems and subsystems installed around the world that deliver the right quality of life that we all want."
Energy efficiency in the box
"Electric motors use and control electromagnetic fields to create motion to turn them. Variable speed drives may be little known to the general public, but I would call them the box for energy efficiency. Inside the box are power semiconductors and electronics that work with software to generate the right speed and torque to control the motor. – A more efficient method than the previous common practice of using brakes to control speed.
"In this way, you can save 25 to 40 percent, or even 50 percent, of energy compared to if we were to run the motor at full speed without any speed control."
Why EU ecodesign regulations are important
One of the key elements in achieving the city's sustainability goals and targets is energy efficiency, which can be greatly influenced by electric motors and drive technology.
"I am pleased to see that the energy level of what we call IE3 is effective today, July 1, 2021, and that we are making good progress towards IE4, which is moving to the next level of energy efficiency in 2023. But we can do more because new technologies are already available. ABB offers motor and drive solutions that meet the IE5 efficiency class – the highest level of efficiency of any design to date.
"During 2020, ABB installed a base of high-efficiency motors and drives that saved 198 terawatt hours of electricity, more than three times Switzerland's total annual consumption. By 2023, the expansion of our motor and drive installed base is expected to help customers save an additional 78 TWh of electricity per year – more than Chile's annual consumption. ”
"I believe that industrial energy efficiency is the greatest ability to respond to the climate emergency. It is essentially the world's invisible climate solution. With high-efficiency motors and drives powering most of the critical processes around us, we can keep the world moving while saving energy every day. ”

The principle of ABB leakage switches
The principle of action of the leakage switch is: there are two groups on an iron core: an input current winding and an output current winding, when there is no leakage, the input current and the output current are equal, and the vector sum of the two magnetic fluxes on the iron core is zero, and the electric potential will not be induced on the third winding, otherwise ...
