Season 7 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will feature its first-ever night race in Saudi Arabia. ABB pushes the boundaries of technology to conserve resources and achieve a low-carbon society.

On February 26, night fell in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia, and a new era of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship was about to begin. The opening round of Season 7 will be set in Riyadh's historic Diriyya (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and will be the first race to qualify for the FIA World Championship, confirming the series' pinnacle of motorsport racing. The tournament will follow strict COVID-19 protocols, which have been developed under the guidance of the relevant authorities to enable the event to be conducted in a safe and responsible manner.

Running the start of the season for the third year in a row, the double-head race will be the first E-Prix to run after dark. The 2.5-kilometre, 21-lap street route is located next to the ancient city walls of Diriyah and will be illuminated with the latest low-power LED technology, which consumes up to 50% less energy than non-LED technology. All the electricity needed for the event, including LED floodlights, will be provided by biofuel.

"At ABB, we see technology as a key enabler for a more sustainable future, and the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is an excellent platform to generate enthusiasm and awareness of the world's most advanced electric vehicle technology," said Theodor Swedjemark, a member of the Group's Executive Committee responsible for communications and sustainability.

The return of the series to Saudi Arabia supports the Kingdom's 2030 vision to diversify its economy and develop its public service sector. This vision has many synergies with ABB's own Sustainability 2030 Strategy: it aims to enable ABB to make a positive contribution to a more sustainable world by achieving a low-carbon society, conserving resources and promoting social progress.

ABB Saudi Arabia is headquartered in Riyadh and has several manufacturing sites, service workshops and sales offices. The global technology leader's extensive experience in driving progress towards a more sustainable future means it is well-positioned to support the Kingdom in realizing its emerging gigabit projects such as the Red Sea, Amaala, Qiddiya and NEOM, including the recently announced "Line" project.

Mohammed AlMousa, Country Managing Director, ABB Saudi Arabia, said: "ABB Saudi Arabia has a strong local presence in Saudi Arabia for more than 70 years and has played a key role in the country's major industrial and infrastructure projects. Backed by more than 130 years of deep domain expertise in our customers' industries, ABB is a global technology leader, and with our robotics, automation, electrification and motion solutions, we will continue to play a key role in Saudi Arabia's ambitions to achieve smart cities and in a variety of fields." Giga project as part of Vision 2030. ”

In 2020, ABB began its first residential charger project in Saudi Arabia, supplying its market-leading EV chargers to Riyadh's premier residential complex. ABB offers two types of AC Terra chargers: one that will be installed in the basement of an apartment building and the other that will be used in a villa.

ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an international racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its technology supports events on city street circuits around the world. ABB entered the EV market in 2010 and today sells more than 400,000 EV chargers in more than 85 markets; More than 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 AC chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.
