ABB and Nüvü provide exoplanet cameras for NASA's Future Telescope

The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, NASA's future space observatory, is scheduled to launch in 2025 in search of other Earth-like internationals. It carries two instruments: one is to study the mysteries of the distribution of dark energy in the world; and the first dedicated exoplanet imaging camera in space, CGI (CoronaGraph Imager). The CGI will be equipped with two high-sensitivity cameras with electronic cores, jointly developed by ABB and Nüvü.

Extrasolar planet systems are extremely difficult to survey from a distance, as the planets are much darker than neighboring stars and are simply inseparable from each other. United States NASA's CGI's complex arrangement of optical components managed to block the starlight and send residual light from nearby planets to highly sensitive cameras. This is where the common ABB/Nüvü imaging solution comes into play in alerting to unusual points that were previously invisible.

Prior to winning the ABB contract, private satellite constellation operator GHGSAT recently issued a rated optical sensor capable of high-definition imaging of methane leaks on the ground. ABB optics have been in space for more than 90 years in reliable operation. Since 2003, SCISAT sensors have tracked long-term compositional changes in more than 60 molecules and pollutants in the Earth's atmosphere, as small as one part per trillion.

Climate agencies around the world use ABB skills as the core of United States' National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) latest generation of polar satellites to make predictions, saving lives by improving the timeliness and accuracy of weather forecasts. Seven days. ABB sensors are also flying on Japan's GOSAT 1 and 2 satellites to monitor the steady rise of global greenhouse gases since 2009 with high accuracy.
