ABB Formula E hosted the first Spain E-Prix in Valencia.
This weekend, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will head to the Tormo circuit in Ricardo ·, which has only been used for pre-season testing since 2017 but will now be the official competition venue for the series. The two-person event will be held behind closed doors and following strict COVID-19 protocols, developed under the guidance of the relevant authorities to enable the event to be conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
The circuit Ricardo Tormo was built in 1999 to host MotoGP and is named after Spain motorcycle legend Ricardo Tormo. The natural racing amphitheatre on the outskirts of Valencia will expose 24 drivers to a challenging technical track, including a series of sharp corners and short straights.
Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications & Sustainability Officer at ABB, said: "Energy management is a key element of ABB Formula E, and the championship provides us with the perfect platform to showcase how we are pushing the boundaries of technology to improve energy efficiency and ultimately contribute to a more sustainable future. ”
Marc Gómez, Managing Director of ABB Spain, added: "The first E-Prix in Spain gave us the opportunity to highlight the tremendous progress ABB is driving in energy management and efficiency across the country. For example, ABB's drives and high-efficiency motors have enabled InterContinental Madrid to achieve energy savings of around 40 percent. ”
ABB recently called on governments and industry to accelerate the adoption of high-efficiency motors and variable speed drives, such as those used at the InterContinental Madrid Hotel, to combat climate change. Over the past decade, electric motor and drive technology has advanced at an exceptionally rapid pace. However, the large number of industrial electric motor drive systems in operation today (approximately 300 million worldwide) are inefficient or consume much more power than needed. Independent studies estimate that global electricity consumption could be reduced by up to 10% if these systems were replaced by optimized, efficient equipment.
ABB is also helping to reduce emissions by developing energy storage and traction systems that drive decarbonization and support the transition to more sustainable electric vehicles. In 2020, ABB Spain received an order for traction converters and energy storage systems to be installed on 36 CITYLINK trams manufactured by Stadler's Spain subsidiary in Valencia. The new fleet will reduce emissions in and around Cardiff, Wales, operate on part of the network using overhead lines, while switching to battery mode in the non-electrified segment and will replace the current diesel fleet.
Another example of how ABB is improving energy management in Spain is the technology that the electrification business provides for a smart city project in Zaragoza. The company upgraded the city's landmark buildings with advanced energy monitoring with a cloud-based energy management platform that is part of the ABB AbilityTM portfolio and incorporates multiple technologies. This allows Spain cities to take their first steps towards ISO energy management standards.
In addition, ABB is contributing to the Spain government's goal of gradually decarbonizing the economy through technologies such as its new Panto Up charger, which is currently improving the interoperability, flexibility and efficiency of the Barcelona Metropolitan Transport electric bus fleet.
ABB began its operations in Spain in 1917 and now employs more than 1,300 people in four large production, engineering and service centers and more than 20 sales offices.
ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, an international racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its technology supports events on city street circuits around the world. ABB entered the eMobility market in 2010 and today sells more than 400,000 EV chargers in more than 85 markets; More than 20,000 DC fast chargers and 380,000 AC chargers, including those sold through Chargedot.

The principle of ABB leakage switches
The principle of action of the leakage switch is: there are two groups on an iron core: an input current winding and an output current winding, when there is no leakage, the input current and the output current are equal, and the vector sum of the two magnetic fluxes on the iron core is zero, and the electric potential will not be induced on the third winding, otherwise ...
