ABB wins framework contract worth more than $100 million to strengthen Italy's power grid

Terna has been contracted by ABB Power Grids to supply gas-insulated switchgear in a European tender

ABB signed a four-year framework contract with Terna, the Italy transmission system operator (TSO), valued at more than $100 million. The TSO is responsible for securing and dispatching the nation's electricity.

Terna will leverage ABB's advanced skills to strengthen Italy's power grid. The contract includes the supply of gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) from ABB, a solution that significantly reduces the equipment footprint to one-tenth of the space occupied by an air-insulated switchgear substation.

ABB's GIS solutions enable substations to be built within cities, buildings, underground, and on rooftops to provide safe and reliable power. GIS is a compact and robust solution for safe operations in confined spaces.

ABB pioneered GIS skills more than 50 years ago and continues to drive innovation in the field. As the market and skills leader in high-voltage GIS skills, ABB supplies ratings and usage from 72.5kV to 1,200kV, with a plant base of more than 35,000 racks worldwide.
