ABB Formula E returns to San Diego for the third round of the sixth season
Electric vehicles and mining projects that benefit from ABB technology
The third round of Season 6 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will return to the Parque O'Higgins circuit in Santiago, Chile.
In Ad Diriyah, Sam Bird and Alexander Sims ·· the top step of the podium in the first and second rounds, respectively, and after a thrilling double-header, the winner will head to the southern hemisphere in the summer. Held against the stunning backdrop of the Andes, the Antofagasta Minerals Santiago E-Prix is a 2.3-kilometer, 11-turn track located in a 75-hectare recreational space in the heart of the city. Following a successful season opener and victory at the Chile circuit in 2019, Sam · Bird is sure to be a strong contender this weekend.
Chile has become a true electric vehicle capital, and ABB is a major player in this field. The country has a 1,000-kilometer network of fast chargers – the most extensive in South America – including more than 30 ABB chargers. As part of this network, ABB also offers the continent's first ultra-fast charger in Santiago. The Terra HP is the world's fastest EV charger, adding up to 200 km of range to an EV in just 8 minutes.
Santiago further demonstrates the country's focus on electric vehicles and building a more sustainable future. The Chile capital's public transport system has nearly 400 electric buses and operates the largest fleet of electric buses outside of China. ABB is the world's leading supplier of charging stations for such applications, including automated systems for overnight charging at bus stops and "opportunity" battery replenishment along the route during the day. In February, ABB will open Chile's first depot charging station to charge 24 all-electric buses.
Chile plays a pivotal role in the global EV revolution not only in the implementation of electric vehicles and charging infrastructure. It is also the world's second-largest producer of lithium, which is an important component of lithium-ion electric vehicle batteries, such as the one that powers ABB's Formula E race cars. Taken from the salt flats of the Atacama Desert, about 1,600 kilometers north of Santiago, lithium is in high demand as electric vehicle production increases. In addition, Chile is a major producer of copper, a highly conductive metal essential for electric vehicles, in which ABB plays an important role.
ABB has supplied a range of cutting-edge technologies for some of the country's major mining projects, such as Chile's largest state-owned copper mine and gearless conveyor drive systems for the world's most powerful conveyor belt systems for underground mining projects. ABB has also installed an on-demand ventilation system called ABB AbilityTM Ventilation Optimizer, both of which are considered the largest systems in the world. By controlling the mine's ventilation system, you can reduce your carbon footprint and save up to 50% of your energy per year.
In northern Chile, where the highest levels of solar radiation are located, ABB supplies solar inverters for more than 50% of solar power plants. The company's power equipment is also widely used throughout Chile, helping to create a resilient energy supply that is resistant to earthquakes.
"ABB plays an important role in supporting Chile's industry, connecting hydro, solar or wind installations, automating mining operations and providing technology through its Ability™ digital solutions," explains Marcelo Schumacker, ABB's Country Managing Director for Chile. "In addition, the country's commitment to electric vehicles makes it an ideal place for the Championship and ABB to showcase and promote the future of mobility."
With two offices, a drive service workshop and ABB University (technical and local training center), Chile is ABB's main market in Latin America and employs around 600 people. The company has long-term relationships with the main industries in Chile: pulp and paper, energy and, above all, mining with domestic and foreign customers.

The principle of ABB leakage switches
The principle of action of the leakage switch is: there are two groups on an iron core: an input current winding and an output current winding, when there is no leakage, the input current and the output current are equal, and the vector sum of the two magnetic fluxes on the iron core is zero, and the electric potential will not be induced on the third winding, otherwise ...
