ABB has reduced the carbon footprint of its manufacturing site in Beijing and expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 400 tons per year, supporting the company's goal of achieving carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2030.
ABB today launched a new integrated solar power and renewable energy system at its manufacturing site in Beijing, ABB Low Voltage Mounting Materials Co., Ltd. ABB's low-voltage products plant employs more than 600 people and covers an area of approximately 24,000 square meters. The rooftop PV system will provide around 420 MWh of electricity per year and is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 400 tonnes per year. ABB's EV chargers and advanced energy management software systems provide a holistic energy efficiency solution that leverages building automation and digitalization throughout the plant.
The Beijing project was launched in 2019 following a successful pilot project in 2019 by the company's Busch-Jaeger subsidiary in Rüdenscheid, Germany, where the PV system provides around 1,100 MWh of climate-neutral solar energy per year. The system produces enough climate-neutral solar energy to meet 100% of the plant's electricity needs on sunny days and reduces the plant's CO2 emissions by around 680 tons per year.
"Based on our experience with our self-sufficient energy plant in Luedenscheid, Germany, our recent project in Beijing is another important milestone for us to achieve carbon neutrality in our own operations by 2030," said Theodor Swedjemark, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer. "Our new ambitious sustainability strategy will benefit all stakeholders across our value chain and contribute to the realization of a low-carbon society."
Oliver Iltisberger, President of ABB's Intelligent Buildings Division, commented: "Today's launch of energy efficiency solutions at our Beijing site represents the next step in ABB's sustainability strategy, addressing the root causes of climate change and living our own core values. Using insights, starting with our first net-zero carbon factory in Luedenscheid, we have developed our sustainable building model into a more efficient and scalable solution that we can apply globally to manufacturing facilities, homes, buildings, cities and industries around the world to reduce their environmental impact and accelerate ABB's mission to electrify zero. ”
The project uses ABB's intelligent energy management technology, with all equipment connected to the cloud-based ABB AbilityTM distribution control system*, which leverages big data and artificial intelligence for monitoring, optimization and maintenance prediction. A comprehensive ABB i-bus® KNX intelligent building control system was also installed to optimize the control of lighting, curtains, heating, ventilation, security and other equipment in the workshop and office.
Digitizing buildings through connected technologies and building automation plays a key role in helping to manage grid reliability and power consumption, as well as reducing energy costs while improving energy efficiency.
*Two well-known energy and asset management solutions, ABB Ability™ Distribution Control System (EDCS) and ABB Ability™ Electrical System Asset Health - MyRemoteCare are being further developed and migrated in a single user interface. ABB Electrification celebrates the growth of this product with the new ABB Ability™ Energy and Asset Manager.
