Customized ABB UPS know-how provides a robust, sustainable solution for an all-electric racing series
Launch of a new podcast, ABB Decoded, for an in-depth look at the skills that are reshaping our world
From November 28 to December 1, 2020, Season 7 of the ABB FIA Formula E International Championship has fully recovered, and all 12 teams will take to the track in Valencia, Spain, for testing.
Entering its fourth season as a champion partner, ABB will continue to implement ABB's uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and other preemptive skills in the all-electric championship.
The UPS installation is in the TV compound of the competition series. It ensures that power continues to reach the broadcaster in the event of a grid power failure on the track, ensuring that the live event will never be "off the air". There was no canonical solution to meet the requirements of a fast-paced global championship, so a team of ABB experts developed a custom unit.
The resulting UPS system is wheeled and portion-optimized for mobility, with a small, solid package that can be shipped by courier or passenger aircraft. It is plug-and-play to simplify setup for field teams and can supply an autonomous 60kVA power supply for 15 minutes with an input/output voltage of 230/400VAC at 50 Hz.
The combination of UPS and ABB's charging solutions for the Gen3 sedan to be launched in Q9 continues to put ABB at the forefront of sustainable skills development in this and other ranges.
Tarak Mehta, President ·of ABB Electrification, said: "With our partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E International Championship, we will be working with Formula E to demonstrate many of the things that will drive electric cars and sustainability forward.
"UPS and charging are two examples where we can show the advantages of high performance in a competitive environment."
At ABB, sustainability means a healthier and more prosperous world for generations to come. In collaboration with Formula E, the company is helping to encourage the global adoption of clean mobility by enhancing its skills and highlighting the benefits of electric sedans. The ABB FIA Formula E International Championship provides a channel to push the boundaries of skills that can be transferred from the track to the actual world, helping to conserve resources and achieve a low-carbon society.
Jam·ie Reigle, CEO of Formula E, said: "At Formula E, we value ABB as our champion partner and strategic ally. We share common goals and values, and we are committed to accelerating sustainable progress as we race for a better future. Formula E provides the perfect testing channel for skills such as ABB's UPS, which translate the track into an everyday environment. With Formula E racing in one of the most iconic cities in the world, we can showcase ABB's skills and solutions in an increasingly important urban environment. ”
For Season 7, the series will take the FIA International Championship position, highlighting its growing popularity with 93 million interested customers worldwide as a channel for electric cars and other sustainable skills*.
Learn about the latest trends and skills
For collaborative quizzes, ABB will launch a new podcast, ABB Decoded, on December 4, which will discuss with leading thinkers and innovators about the new skills that are reshaping our world. In the first session, Frank Muehlon, Head of Global E-Mobility Infrastructure Solutions, ABB, gave an in-depth discussion on the changes in car international; The trend and future of electric cars and the role that charging infrastructure needs to play in the selection of electric cars (EVs). Future episodes will cover topics such as sustainability, smart cities, and decarbonisation, and will be available on abb.com.
The latest installment of ABB's branded content series, "Driving Forward", was also recently released. At this session, Driving Effiency, Mahindra Racing Principal Dilbagh Gill and ABB Traction President Edgar Kellar were interviewed about the parallel importance of regenerative braking in ABB Formula E and electrified railways. The series will continue to air in Season 7 and can be watched here.
Amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the race schedule for Season 7 continues with the health and well-being of the entire Formula E community and the residents of the E-Prix host city as a top priority.
The season program starts with two doubles: the first will be a "closed-door" event in Santiago, Chile (January 16 and 17, 2021), while the second will be held in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia (February 26 and 27, 2021) The program is open and there are spectators. Diriyah's race will be the series' first-ever nighttime race, and the track will be illuminated with low-consumption LED skills powered by fully renewable power. Competitions previously announced in Mexico City and Sanya, China, have been postponed to later this year.
Because participation in E-Prix was unavoidable, ABB was developing virtual experiences that would allow guests and key customers to enjoy most of the weekend's race experiences, even if they were unable to attend in person. In addition to a dedicated microsite with news and content on the event and a link to check the action on the track, ABB will also provide multimedia experiences that focus on the collection itself as well as related topics such as sustainability, mobility and power, which will be presented and contributed in collaboration with ABB's collaborators.
The International Championship will once again enjoy the 24-car grid and the 12 teams of Season 6 will resume racing – although there have been several driver substitutions. Season 7 is sure to witness a fierce race to replace defending champions Antonio Felix da Costa and DS Techeetah in both the Drivers and Teams categories.
ABB will continue to be the official partner of the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team this season, while Sébastien Buemi of Nissan e. Dams of Switzerland and Simona de Silvestro of Porsche will continue to serve as ABB ambassadors.
ABB is the title partner of the ABB FIA Formula E International Championship, an international racing series of all-electric single-seaters. Its skills support activities on the Main Street Circuit in cities around the world. ABB is a global leader in fast charger devices, with more than 17,000 units sold in 80 countries around the world.
