To coincide with the return of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship to Rome, ABB will donate DC fast chargers to the city as part of its ongoing commitment to building a more sustainable future.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship travels to Rome's EUR business district this weekend for the third race of the Rome E-Prix – which will be a two-man race this year. Both matches will be held behind closed doors and following strict COVID-19 protocols in place under the guidance of the relevant authorities to allow the event to be conducted in a safe and responsible manner.
The new track has a revised 19-turn, 3.385-kilometer layout with longer straights, wide corners and elevation changes. This quick layout creates the second-longest track on the calendar, a combination that is sure to push drivers, cars and teams to their limits.

These DC fast chargers are capable of charging two vehicles at the same time and are fully compatible with current and future electric vehicles.
For ABB, Italy is the showcase location for the championship, as its industry-leading Terra series of EV chargers and E-bus chargers are manufactured here.
The Terranuova Bracciolini charger manufacturing plant in Tuscany is operating at full speed, while the new ABB plant in San Giovanni Valdarno is currently under construction, which will serve as a global center of excellence and production base for EV charging infrastructure.
The 16,000-square-meter facility is expected to be operational by the end of 2021 and will produce ABB's full range of direct current (DC) EV battery chargers – from home installations to systems for installation in public areas and systems dedicated to urban public transport. This new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility will help further support ABB's growth and innovation in the field of electric vehicles.
Another example of ABB's drive for electric vehicles in Italy is a turnkey solution for Milanese public transport service Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), which aims to convert its entire fleet to electric vehicles by 2030. The ABB solution, which included the installation of 15 Terra 124 chargers at the ATM's San Donato warehouse, enabled the electric buses to continue to be used without the need for temporary charging during the day. ATM estimates that, when fully implemented, the modification of its buses will reduce its demand for diesel by 30 million litres per year and reduce CO2 emissions by 75,000 tonnes per year.
