ABB supplied Ty-Rap™ cable ties for the NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover Mission.
As NASA's Mars Permanence rover begins exploring its new planetary home after landing on February 18, 2021, it operates with the world's most advanced technology while being equipped with a Ty-Rap™ cable tie from ABB, the same cable ties widely used on Earth.
Found in buildings, subways, the deepest oceans and outer space, ABB's Ty-Rap cable ties are designed to withstand the demands of spaceflight and resist corrosion and radiation in the most extreme environments. NASA integrates the same Ty-Rap cable ties used in commercial applications worldwide to secure the rover's internal and external conduits and assemblies and protect research and laboratory equipment.
"Similar to standard cable ties, which are a practical solution for organizing everything from indoor wires to outdoor lights in the home, high-performance Ty-Rap cable ties connect and secure the rover's wires and equipment," said President Matthias · Heilman. ABB installation products. "For nearly 50 years, these Ty-Rap cable ties have performed in the harshest conditions on Earth and protected components from the high impact factors and drastic temperature changes found in previous space expeditions."
The business, known today as ABB Installation Products, has been supplying products to the space program since 1973, and Ty-Rap cable ties continue to be used on NASA's still-operating Curiosity rover, and previously also for the twin Spirit and Opportunity rovers. Originally patented in 1958, the standard Ty-Rap cable tie is known for its Grip of Steel™ locking device in commercial and home use. Since then, nearly 30 billion Ty-Rap cable ties have been produced – laid end-to-end, enough to stretch to the moon and back a dozen times.
The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission is part of United States NASA's Mars exploration program, part of a long-term effort to explore the Red Planet's robotic exploration. The mission addresses high-priority scientific objectives for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars.
ABB has a long-standing partnership with NASA, which began more than 30 years ago with the contribution of optical sensors to support the experiments of the Space Shuttle. In November 2020, the company announced a contract with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPROTU) to enable key technologies from ABB and its partner Nüvü Camēras to be on a space telescope in 2025 to capture the first spaceborne images of our extrasolar planets. ABB is also the primary supplier of NASA's JPSS family of United States meteorological satellites. These weather satellites are critical hardware for United States space missions or flagship space missions.
As part of the Electrification business area, ABB Installation Products (formerly Thomas & Betts) is a global leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of products for managing the connection, protection and distribution of electricity in industrial, building and utility applications. With more than 200,000 products from more than 38 premium brands, ABB Installation Product Solutions can be found anywhere electricity is used.
