Le Commandant Charcot made history with ABB's Azipod® propulsion system, becoming the first expedition cruise ship to reach the North Pole
The ship is built with the environment in mind and is equipped with the largest energy storage system installed on the cruise ship for maximum sustainability
The hybrid-electric discovery cruise ship Le Commandant Charcot became the first vessel of its kind to reach the geographic North Pole on September 6, 2021, as it completes sea trials in preparation for its maiden voyage to welcome guests later this year.
This luxury cruise ship is equipped with Azipod® propulsion technology, which produces minimal noise and vibration to provide a comfortable experience for passengers. In addition, the marine energy storage system, supplied and integrated by ABB, is the largest in its class, reaching nearly 5 MWh, allowing the engine to be switched off for quiet, emission-free cruising.

Le Commandant Charcot will also be available to the scientific community, contributing to global efforts to study and protect the polar regions and oceans. The ship is equipped with measuring instruments and houses a scientific laboratory and a lunar pool for sampling, all designed to meet the requirements of academic research. With this, Le Commandant Charcot provides scientists around the world with a platform for observation, research, and analysis, allowing them to study remote areas by collecting data from these areas on a regular basis.
"ABB designed the Azipod® propulsion unit and energy storage system to meet the precise operational requirements of Le Commandant Charcot," said Mathieu Petiteau, Director of New Construction and R&D at PONANT. "In addition to ensuring a high level of passenger comfort, the vessel is also capable of cruising in zero-emission mode when exploring remote areas. Thanks to the maneuverability of the Azipod® system, the vessel will also be able to sail smoothly and safely in icy waters. ”
"The Azipod® propulsion system has become the solution of choice for exploration cruise ships operating in highly sensitive and demanding marine environments. We are proud to have been selected by PONANT and look forward to seeing Le Commandant Charcot in service in the years to come," said Dick Björkqvist, Global Division Manager Cruises at ABB Marine & Ports.
Since the electric drive motor is located in an underwater pod outside the hull, the Azipod® system can rotate 360 degrees, significantly improving the ship's maneuverability and operational efficiency and reducing fuel consumption by up to 20% compared to conventional shafting systems. Since its introduction 30 years ago, the Azipod® propulsion system has saved more than 1,000,000 tons of fuel in passenger cruising alone. Azipod® thrusters range from 1 to 22 megawatts in their technology, which plays a key role in ABB's strong position in environmentally friendly electric propulsion.

Le Commandant Charcot was the first cruise ship capable of sailing in "double-acting mode", meaning it could sail stern first in ice conditions for increased safety and timely and efficient sailing. In addition, the Azipod® system allows the vessel to come to a complete stop 50% of the time compared to vessels with a conventional shafting setup.
The vessel's emphasis on safety is further reflected in its connectivity to ABB Ability's™ collaborative operations infrastructure. With round-the-clock access to a global network of ABB experts, Le Commandant Charcot will benefit from remote equipment monitoring and diagnostics to improve passenger and vessel safety – services that are especially important for vessels operating over the world's farthest distances.
ABB's scope of supply for this groundbreaking vessel also includes power generation and distribution technology, propulsion control and remote control systems, and power and energy management systems (PEMS).™ With PEMS™, Le Commandant Charcot will optimize the use of its hybrid power supply, including mains, LNG and energy storage systems, to ensure optimal engine loads while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The vessel is also equipped with ABB's Power2 two-stage turbocharging solution, which provides further fuel savings of up to 5%.
Juha Koskela, President of ABB's Marine & Ports Division, said: "We are rapidly expanding our product portfolio in this area with the delivery of another high-spec passenger vessel with ABB's integrated power and propulsion technology to its owner. "Le Commandant Charcot perfectly demonstrates the benefits of our electric, digital and connected solutions for this type of vessel, providing a blueprint for other expedition vessels to emulate."

The principle of ABB leakage switches
The principle of action of the leakage switch is: there are two groups on an iron core: an input current winding and an output current winding, when there is no leakage, the input current and the output current are equal, and the vector sum of the two magnetic fluxes on the iron core is zero, and the electric potential will not be induced on the third winding, otherwise ...
