At the site at the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport, in the presence of Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport of Germany, MAN Truck & Bus unveiled a near-series prototype of its upcoming electric truck, which was publicly driven for the first time today. A special technical feature of this groundbreaking electric commercial vehicle, which will be launched on the market in 2024, is its future megawatt charging capability. ABB E-mobility, a leading global provider of EV charging solutions, aims to bring megawatt charging technology to market maturity within the next three years. As a result, MAN and ABB E-mobility are accelerating for the next phase of e-mobility: the operational capacity of heavy-duty long-haul trucks with a range of between 600 and 800 kilometers per day. In addition, with their clear commitment to electric vehicles,
"We need to decarbonise road freight to meet our climate goals. To achieve this, we are focusing first and foremost on the growth of the market for climate-friendly commercial vehicles and the development of a corresponding high-performance charging infrastructure. Our project provides important lessons learned to support high-performance charging of electric trucks on the A2. It's important now to get more electric trucks on the road quickly. The partnership between MAN and ABB shows that we are on the right track," said Dr. Volker · Wiesing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport.
During the minister's test drive of the MAN electric truck, Alexander Vlaskamp, CEO of MAN Truck & Bus, stressed that "accelerating the expansion of charging infrastructure is the only way to achieve transport development and meet climate goals." He also highlighted why MAN relies on battery-electric powertrains in the carbon-free commercial fleet of the future: low operating costs and an optimal overall energy footprint. As part of the Traton Group, we have established joint ventures with industry partners to develop and operate a high-performance public charging network, with the goal of establishing at least 1,700 green electricity charging points in Europe," Vlaskamp added.
In order to achieve long distances of 600 to 800 kilometers per day, the MAN electric truck, which will be launched in 2024, already has the technical prerequisites for a future megawatt-class charging system. As the world's leading provider of charging solutions, ABB E-mobility intends to bring such charging systems to market quickly.
"Our goal is to promote electrification in all areas. At ABB E-mobility, we have been working to set the corresponding performance standards for many years. Megawatt charging will require new power technologies in excess of 1000 volts, so the electrical safety and reliability of the system is critical at these power levels and in predictable use cases. ABB E-mobility is the ideal supplier to meet these challenges, as we can significantly accelerate R&D on top of existing technologies. Our common goal is to bring this new technology to market within three years, says Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility. In the past, such stages of development typically took longer.
Binding and harmonized standards are also essential for the introduction of megawatt charging technology. Germany can set a benchmark here: More than 20 industrial and scientific partners, including MAN and ABB, are working on a high-performance charging project (called "HoLa" in German), funded by the Germany government, as the world's leading first megawatt charging project. Two high-performance charging stations equipped with megawatt charging systems (MCS) are being built at four locations along the A2 federal highway. The project is intended to serve as a basis for national expansion.
