ABB's bi-directional charging technology for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) partnerships once again underscores ABB's global leadership in electric vehicles.
As part of the DREEV contract, a joint venture with France Electric Power Company (EDF) and Nuvve, ABB will offer a new 11 kW bidirectional charging technology designed specifically for V2G.
ABB's solution, combined with DREEV software technology, will enable EV drivers to export excess power back to the grid. V2G has the potential to generate up to €20/EV/month in revenue, reducing the total cost of ownership and further boosting the adoption of electric vehicles. Bidirectional chargers also help smooth the uneven flow of renewable energy generation, such as solar and wind.
Frank Muehlon, Global Business Leader for E-Mobility Infrastructure Solutions at ABB, said: "ABB is the global market leader in fast-charging solutions. We are excited about the opportunity to support DREEV's mission to actively participate in leveraging V2G technology to make the grid more resilient." Our partnership with DREEV is one of the world's leading efforts to deploy true V2G technology to the space. ”
Under the partnership, ABB will offer V2G bidirectional kiosks in France and then install them in the United Kingdom, Italy, Belgium and Germany.
The lightweight and compact 11 kW charger provides fast and flexible charging and is fully compatible with current and future electric vehicles. It meets the most stringent grid compliance requirements and is designed to be the global benchmark for V2G charging.
"The development of this smart bi-charging solution will be key to driving the next step in our EV ecosystem and an important milestone in ABB's sustainability strategy," Muehlon added. ”
Eric Mevellec, CEO of DREEV, added: "V2G is a technology that requires innovation and industrial capabilities. Partnering with ABB is key to taking our solutions to the next level." We are now ready to accelerate business development. ”
There are currently very few V2G-enabled EVs, but they are expected to become the dominant technology in the next five years. With the number of electric vehicles on the road expected to grow to 559 million by 2040 and 33% of the world's fleet will be powered by electricity (1), the world's energy ecosystem needs to evolve to support this transition.
ABB's V2G technology is designed to be a key enabler and is a natural fit for ABB. In addition to its leadership in EV charging, ABB is also a major player in utility services. V2G combines these two areas of expertise to provide concrete answers to the energy challenges faced by network operators.

The principle of ABB leakage switches
The principle of action of the leakage switch is: there are two groups on an iron core: an input current winding and an output current winding, when there is no leakage, the input current and the output current are equal, and the vector sum of the two magnetic fluxes on the iron core is zero, and the electric potential will not be induced on the third winding, otherwise ...
