ABB provides power assurance for manufacturers of 5G mobile devices

ABB's digital power management and power system ensures reliable uptime and improves the power and sustainability of OPPO's manufacturing base, one of the world's largest mobile device manufacturers and a global player in China's ongoing 5G development.

More than 5 billion people around the world already use their mobile phones – and that number is rising. For their part, smartphones and other mobile devices are becoming more sophisticated and robust. One of the driving forces behind this technology is OPPO.

At its large-scale new technology park in Chongqing, China, ABB's digital power management and power system ensure that OPPO benefits from a smart and reliable power supply.

Estimated to be completed in 2024, the 102-hectare OPPO Chongqing Smart Ecological Science and Technology Park will become OPPO's largest production base in South China, with an annual output of 100 million smart devices after completion. The park will serve as an important production base and logistics center, integrating intelligent production, automated warehousing, and software and hardware research and development.

Touted as an integrated "smart" tech park, the park is estimated to have an annual output value of more than 30 billion yuan (US$4.5 billion) and create tens of thousands of jobs. The park will support OPPO to create a series of smart products and services around smartphones, leading the industrial development in the 5G+ era.

The financial details of the contract have not yet been published, but the park uses the cloud-based ABB Ability™ Distribution Control System (EDCS)* to monitor, operate and secure its distribution system. ABB's iVD4® intelligent management solution ensures stable medium-voltage power supply. The ABB solution enables field handlers to monitor the health of power equipment in real time and automatically push any alerts to operations and protection teams.

As a result, by using ABB Ability™ solutions, power supply continuity is higher, handling costs are lower, power savings of up to 20 percent and operating costs savings of up to 30 percent are achieved. The maintenance and scheduling of power equipment is more intelligent, and the power distribution system is safer and more reliable. ABB's AI-driven predictive protection also optimizes protection work processes while reducing power outages.

According to data from China's Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), China's mobile phone shipments in 2020 will be 308 million units.
